First Sober Vacation!
First Sober Vacation!
Okay so I posted this in the newcomers forum in hopes of inspiring newcomers. I am almost 5 months sober now and right now I am posting this from CALIFORNIA! (I live in Delaware)
I am on day 2 of my first sober vacation and we've flown from philly, I walked past a half a dozen bars without even thinking about a drink. I was offered one on the plane and politely declined and had a soda instead. Arrived in Los Angeles Thursday night and drove past several more liquor stores. NO problem! NO anxiety!
BUT THE BIGGEST PROGRESS OF ALL IS THIS:
for the last 4 and a half months my boyfriend, who is NOT alcoholic, has abstained from drinking in order to support me. Since we are on vacation he asked me "Hey, is it okay with you if I have a beer with dinner?"
Now normally I would get immediate anxiety and I would get upset and tell him no absolutely not! However this time, I felt none of those feelings and i said "sure honey, no problem, have whatever you like"
And he sipped his beer and I did not even care. I looked at it once and I said to myself "you are amazing! you dont even want that beer, nor do you need it!'
This right here is just proof to me that God and AA are working for me in my life. My obsession for alcohol appears to be going away, not totally yet but it is diminishing and this I am extremely thankful for!
EDIT: my only request for my boyfriend was that he brush his teeth and/or use mouthwash so that I would not be able to taste or smell the beer should he kiss me. LOL Which I think is a reasonable request!

Congrats for your courage and your sticking with sobriety,Flyer.
I am also on a kinda vacation as I have been in Mexico for 5 months now (retired).I am only on Day 11 of no alcohol but find right now I stick to my apartment at night instead of going out as I am not that strong yet.I usually would have a couple drinks before I even went out for drinks then dinner and then more drinks after dinner.I now either make dinner or get dinner to go and then make myself tea or decaf coffee after dinner and sit outside on my balcony or just watch movies.
I hope to be like you are and be able to be around drinkers and feel comfortable one day.

Wow - look at you go Flyer! I loved visiting Cali, but I was still drinking when I did. Wish I could go back and experience it all sober, the way you are! It's so wonderful when we no longer feel like we're missing out on something.
And damn they sell beer EVERYWHERE out here don't they? Lol. I saw it in the grocery store , gas station, etc. Back in DE they are not allowed to do that. Good thing I don't want it anymore, or I'd be in trouble here, lmao!

Welcome to California, FlyerFan.
Yep, but no worries, because you don't drink. It's the same miserable crap they sell in Delaware. Besides, all the stores are behind you when you're standing on the beach, looking out over the Pacific.

This post made my day!!! With summer almost here it's the beginning of my heavy drinking season...but NOT anymore! I keep thinking of how much more energy I will have on vacation this year with not being hungover.
Congrats!! Go YOU!!!
Congrats!! Go YOU!!!
I have taken 250 photos with my new camera so far, and we are only on day 4 out of 10! So once I am back home I will upload them all and anyone who wants to see them can add me on Facebook if they wish.
Hey flyer,
Great accomplishment! I am new and am definitely inspired by your post! Thank you. I was thinking about planning a vacation to celebrate 3 or 6 months, nice to know you can have success while on vacation. Way to go!
