An old friend.

I got a phone number for an old friend I hadn’t seen or talked to in thirty years. He was a drinking buddy when I was pre high school along with my other friend who lived across the street from me. My brother gave me the number and I called him. I guess I wanted to tell him that I got into AA and haven’t had a drink in ten months. Which I still have a hard time believing. We got to talking about the old days….All we did was drink and get high. I told him those old days caught up to me….And I had to do something about it. He said….”Good for you….I’ve been sober for 25 years….One day at a time.” I was a little shocked….But happy for him. He has a beautiful wife and two beautiful kids…AA worked for him.
He told me he had 18 months and he stopped going to meetings…Thought he had it beat…One drink led into a three year relapse. He came back..Worked the steps and has been sober 25 years and still goes to 4 or 5 meetings a week…To give back what was so freely given to him.
I asked about our other friend that lived across the street from me…He told me he has 23 years sober….And gave me his number. These guys went to AA shortly after I last saw them….I went on to drink all that time. Maybe I’m just a slow learner….Or I needed to lose everything I had to get there….Point is I got there…..And I have two phone numbers of old timers added to my list….People I started my drinking career with. I guess it was time for God to put them back in my life….What a journey it is.

I love this story, Sapling. I'm a slow learner, too. I hope to one day learn that a couple of my old friends are sober, as well.

Thanks for your post, Sapling.
Sounds like they shared the secret of sobriety with you (don't drink and go to meetings).

I do 4-6 meetings a week and have 23 yrs coming up in July.

All the best to you.

I see how it works Bob....I think I'd rather die than pick up one drink...There is no way I can put myself through that again. I don't think I'd make it....And I'm enjoying life too much right now anyway. Keep trudging oldtimer.
