OMG really lucky!!
OMG really lucky!!
I popped in a local alchohol counselling place today, for tickets for a conference at weekend, and had a chat to the guy who runs it, and he has asked me to go on an intensive course he runs, which is basically doing the 12 steps in 12 weeks. It has full counselling and meditations etc, and is from 10am-3pm per day.I am really interested, any ideas guys?
It also allows us time to go to AA meeting nearby

I dont know your circumstances, but 12 weeks out of your life seems a long time
Have you any background recommendations for this guy?
Has a doctor or similar recommended you go there
By all means seek recovery, but be careful

That sounds like a Back to Basics...Where they take you through the steps quickly...I've worked the steps but if I had one available here I'd go through them again. Always wanted to check one of those out. I heard a speaker tape where a guy did it...Like they did it in the 40's....It was pretty cool.

It pretty much sounds like an out-patient program of rehabilitation. You obviously have the time to devote to such an intensive course of study. If he is an experienced certified addictions/alcoholism counsellor, I say go for it. It sounds like a crash course in understanding in a short period of time what, of course, will be a life-long way of life. As long as both you and he understand that it doesn't "end" after 12 weeks...no harm done. Just remember, nobody "graduates" from recovery.
no, it depends on the good reputation of the person conducting the recovery. Infact, it matters more because somebody who is in a desparate state may be more vulnerable.
As I said, I dont know the background, but I do know that SR always says see a doctor first

Not for taking you through the 12 steps. The only backround I'd be conscerned with is if he's done this before....Or at least worked the steps himself. Which I imagine he has.

I always got the impression that people move through the steps at their own emotional pace. I've read lots of posts by people who have been working the steps for months and are just entering step four or five. I'd be a bit cynical about someone claiming they can take you through all 12 steps so quickly. The intensive immersion could be really good, and I can see why a veteran 12 stepper would appreciate it as a refresher, but it seems to go against the idea of working a step until you are thoroughly ready to move on...

After over thirty years of sobriety, the one thing I've learned is there are no set rules...other than "Don't drink, one day at a time." I once thought you went through each step; and, when you got through step twelve, you were home free. Not so...you work one step or the other, every day of your life, for the rest of your life.
I do believe it's not so much being "taken through the steps" as studying the steps, in order to know exactly how to work them. And, this "course" being 12 weeks/3 months, it does sound very much like an out-patient rehabilitation program.

candie, sounds like that's your lucky day !
My recovery began in a 90 day program and we were doing 4th Steps in week 5 (or get out). It was my preliminary run through the Steps. Kinda like being introduced to the piano... now I go out and practice and play it.
All the best.
