Scared to stop..

Hello all. New to this forum today. I've been drinking heavy for the last 10 years. Last couple of years I'm downing a fifth of Bushmills and 1.75 liter bottle of Dewers in 4-5 nights. I want to quit but I'm scared to go cold turkey. My hands are shaking as I type this. I have a big wedding with family I have to attend this weekend and I don't want them to see me like this.... I cant hold a wine glass still until I have two or three scotches in me.....Thanks for your time. A great relief to share this with someone...

You should talk to your dr and he will advise you about whether or not you can safely quit cold turkey.

Do you have a plan for how you will work on your recovery?

What do you plan on doing after the wedding ??.........

I found sobriety and peace in AA, you probably could too.

All the best.

Hi and welcome captotto

I agree with Anna the best and safest course if you're worried about withdrawal is to see a Dr, preferably one who knows about alcoholism - and set your mind at ease

You'll find a lot of support here - good to have you with us

Welcome to the family Captotto! I have to agree with the others, if you're going to stop abruptly it's dangerous. I was warned of stroke or seizure. You might possibly be given something to calm your shakes, depending on what the dr. suggests.

I was in the same shape when I quit drinking. I couldn't even sign my signature or eat a bowl of soup. You don't have to go on like this any longer. I drank my whole life and finally have over 4 yrs. sober. Life can begin again when you're no longer in a fog. Keep posting.

Hi

Good to hear you are stopping. when you go to the doctor tell him honestly what is going on in your life and how much you have been drinking.

I used to lie and halve what I was drinking at the time.

My brother got married less than a week after I decided to quit, my advise, have a plan. Maybe go to a meeting and get someone you can call when you need a "pick me up". You CAN do this! Decide your not going to drink, have a plan and stick to it.
Keep us posted

Good call on going to the Doc... they can definately help. I'd say I was in very similar shape to you about a month ago. I had to have 4-5 drinks before work just so I could carry trays... then I'd watch the clock and drink every hour to make sure the shakes wouldn't come back. It was horrific....

Feel so much better now... even just after a month. No shakes at all... so keep that in mind... once you quit it won't take long to start feeling better! Keep us updated on how you're doing ok buddy??? Take care.

Good decision on seeing the doctor ... it's always best to get medical supervision with detoxing. Good thing too is that it's still early in the week and you can get through the worst of the withdrawals before the weekend wedding. You may be tired and a little foggy but that's better than being shaky and/or drunk!

Glad you're here with us.

Welcome Captotto -

It takes a lot courage to get honest about our drinking and ask for help - so way to go! Things are going to get better! I was terrified to give it up, but now I wish I'd done it sooner.

Keep reading and posting - we'll support you all the way!
