should i wing myself off alcohal or completely stop?

I drink alcohal every single day.it has been a way for me to cope with some very painful emotions that i feel as a result of a certain situation.it allowed me to function and not go crazy..now im soo used to drinking.its seems like i cant stop.i drink for recreation as well.my tolerance for alcohal is soo strong that i drink soo much...i want to be in a place where a simple glass of wine occasionally is all that im drinking....should i try to quit cold turkey or try to have one or two drinks a day until im down to zero.then try and go a few days then months without drinking.how does the rest of the world deal with extreame stress and painful emotions...everyone i know alcohalics.borderline alcohalics or smoke weed

Moderation never worked for me and I never tried tapering because it never sounded that appealing. For me, alcohol only made the stress more debilitating and pain more intense. Quit drinking and you'll likely find that a lot of your problems aren't as big a deal as you thought, and the problems that are major can actually be dealt with instead of just ignored.

welcome babydoll

I recommend seeing a Dr - cold turkey can be indeed dangerous, even life threatening for some...it's always best to be safe.

Tapering never worked for me - how can you control your intake of something you've shown again and again you can't control your intake of?

Welcome Babydoll,

I have never met an alcoholic that could tapper off, including me. I have tried that a 100 times. So cold turkey but see a Doctor first as it is dangerous!

Just a reminder guys - I know babydoll kinda phrased it as a question and we're all trying to help...but please remember our medical rule

I've removed a couple of posts that were well meaning but crossed the line.

If I could have done that, I would have done that. I could not. No rationalization would help me and I am pretty rational. Once I crossed that line to drinking a lot, I couldn't go back to just one drink or glass of any alcohol. I gave up weed & alcohol.

See a doctor for proper detoxing as it can be fatal.

Stay stopped or you'll be back to drinking lots and lots.

Glad you are here!

I would actually go into withdrawal while I had a drink in my hand. No BS. So tapering didn't work for me, so I had a medically assisted detox (and a few non assisted ones before that).

Yes, do be careful with detoxing as others have said.

And, tapering is usually impossible for alcoholics.

You can learn new and healthy ways to deal with life. Exercise helps a lot, as does meditation, journalling and coming here to SR.

I just have a question...does anyone know someone that did successfully taper off drinking? And if you do, is it as dangerous? I know I am going to go the total sober route but was curious.

All of my attempts at tapering resulted in me getting drunk. The first drink is like releasing the brake on a train ... a runaway train. It's the first drink that gets me drunk ... not the 15 that come after it. Stopping completely was the only way I could go.

There's people here who I've seen declare they've done it...but by my experience here the proportion of people who've tried and failed is much greater.

There's people who've gone over Niagara Falls in a barrel too, but I'm not about to try it myself
