Open meeting with Big book
I'm going to my first meeting tonight, its an open meeting so I know that new comers are welcome but it also says "big book"?? this is making me feel like i will be intruding on other peoples progress on working on their 12 steps. Would I just be the outsider holding everyone back because I don't know about the big book? Maybe a silly question but it is making me not want to go to my first meeting tonight.
Nope, it just means that you'll be reading from the big book.

You should go Holly...Everything you need to know is in that book...They should read some and then share about it...Just listen...Take it in...If you don't have a Big Book...See if you can get one there...

Yea Holly you should go! If you don't feel like talking just say "I'm new and just want to listen." -- Or you could go for it and say "I'm new and need a number to call!" Or find something good in the middle Best wishes...
On pages 15-16 of the big book (it was nicknamed this because it's first printing came from a deal the original people had with the publisher--cheap, large paper.... the book was huge! so it was nicknamed "the big book" ) it states:
"We meet frequently so that newcomers may find the fellowship they seek."
Meetings exist for the newcomer. Sponsors exist to take their sponsees through the steps, or program, of AA.
Therefore, no intruding on anything! You'll be one of the most important people there!
Enjoy!

And Holly, you can attend closed meetings, too. The only requirement for membership is a desire to quit drinking.
Closed meetings just mean that the spouse of an alcoholic can't attend, or students studying addiction can't sit in and take notes.
And the only person who can qualify you for membership is yourself.
And all meetings, closed, open, Step Study, Big Book, welcome newcomers constantly.

If you have a desire to stop drinking you are welcome at any meeting. I highly reccomend checking out an all womens meeting as well, because sometimes you just feel much more open around people of the same sex.
