The Drinking Strategy Game

Perhaps we can have a little fun teasing ourselves on the silly ways we have tried to handle our drinking. Simply, I have tried many ways to slow my drinking by doing funny little strategies like:

1) Drink only beer (until I got drunk an ordered shots, mixed drinks, sea breezes)
2) Do 3 shots right away, and drink water the rest of the night
3) Only drink when I am at home (Durrrr)

here is a good one
4) Text my friend everytime I drink, so they can keep track, thus text me back when I have had too much

5) Only bring $20 out to the bar....because there is no way I'd ask a buddy for extra beer money.

P.S All these FAILED miserably. So if you come across one and say, "Boy I didn't try that, maybe I can handle it after all," the truth is....YOU CAN'T. If you are on these forums, I 100% believe you want alcohol OUT of your life, and the only way is abstinence.

How about:

--I'll drink a glass of water between each drink
--For every 2 drinks my friend has, I'll have one
--I'll drive to whatever event, so I can't drink too much
--Don't drink more than 500 calories

None of these worked for me either.

That was the dumbest of them all. Not only didn't it stop me, it actually had me consuming thrice the amount.

It's truly amazing the games we played with ourselves. I always "allowed" myself 3 drinks per shift (8hours) but always gave into the same old.
-It was a long night
-a crabby customer
-bored
Now I must remember to keep busy and find a fruity juicy mix for while at work.......tonight is my 1st night back to work....

I love this one, I inherited it from my grandmother, whom I sadly have zero relationship with.

- Never drink before 5pm.

(But drink 20 times that of a normal person once 5 hits!!!!)

I will only drink if I've already worked out today (I ended up skipping many a workout and getting out of shape)

I'll only drink if I don't have meetings tomorrow (I just went to meetings feeling out of sorts)

I like what you say about being on these forums as an indicator that we want alcohol out of our lives. Thanks!

I want to play!

~ Drink water throughout the day
~ Drink through a straw
~ Drink Wine instead of beer (for calorie watching)
~ Don't drink a lot (12 pk or less) during the week and you can binge on weekends
~ Eat bread before you drink, that way you can drink more and not get drunk (myth busted)

I'm looking at these and thinking...you idiot, really?

oh yeah, and the tired & true: Just one more

-- Playing beer pong and hoping the other side wins. But toasting their losses as well.
-- Having a whole set of drinking glasses that are pool friendly, because all the glass ones broke (and yet I still didn't get the message)
-- Only drinking two beers - the large 20oz, 12% alcohol kind - hey, they were fancy specialty beers
-- Pairing my wine with each meal course, but ordering the 7 course meal

Omg, shall I count the ways!!

1. I would drink on days that I didn't work. (I only worked 3 days a week at the time.)
2. I would drink a higher alcohol content to have less quantity. (This was a horrible choice. No need to explain the outcome of this one.)
3. I would use smaller glasses to give the illusion that I was having less. (Dumb.)

Reading all of these now, I realize just how ridiculous each sounds. And no, not one thing worked, just made things worse. Wow, I was a mess!!

A straw, really? Mine was to put away the straw, as I was literally sucking down drinks in one or two gulps! Surely if I just sipped the drink I'd be just fine! LOL.

I tried this one, sort of. The idea was that I would have the stronger booze (vodka) in a small glass to appear that I was drinking less. Maybe that's what you were doing too.

You know, I really ended up in a bad way. So I'd daintily drink my "short" drinks. Then hop in my car, and stop by the liquor store, buy the little bottles and chug those. Then go home and pour more drinks but without any type of facade except for the one I kept up for my husband. He was always studying or other while I cooked, so I really had free reign with the booze.

Jeesh.

-Only drink on the weekends (Fri and Sat since I work a mon-fri job). I quickly changed the definition of weekend to include Sunday night. Then Thursday night because hey...that's "kind of" the weekend. Then I added Monday because it's so close to Sunday. and then every single day was a day okay for drinking.

-Only drink beer. Then I just upped the beer intake to 18 a night and thought hey...this is not very efficient. Then I'd just switch right back to good ol vodka since it would be the "logical" thing to do.

-Only drink after 3pm when I don't work. Well, this start time got pushed back to 7am pretty quickly.

-Don't drink when I start studying for my tests because salary and raises depend on it (I'm trying to get my CFA). This was also flawed because I kept saying I'll start tomorrow. Tomorrow turned into 5 months and wouldn't ya know it - test day is upon us and I studied barely 10 hours for a test that requires about 250-300 hours of study time. (yes I failed. missed out on the raise, missed out on the bonus, didn't get the promotion, and got kicked out of the company's study program for a year because I failed MISERABLY. My score didn't even register.)

Never drink before noon--it's always noon somewhere.

Drink a lot more light beer. Until I get sick of it and get back to the heavy stuff.

In retrospect, all my moderation efforts led to power drinking.

Here is what I told myself LAST WEEK!

"Maybe if I stop trying to avoid alcohol, and just accept it into my life, I'll control it better."

FLOP!

My best one was only buy one bottle of wine so that was all I could drink.

After that was gone, a taxi to the shop to buy another one or two costing me £20 in taxi fares!
