Running Into People You Know In Treatment; Meetings
We had a new person start treatment today. It's a young man I knew when I was an elementary school librarian, a former student.
"When did you start working here?" he asked.
"I don't work here; I'm a patient." I replied.
Anyone else ever get into a situation like this?

Yes, early on at one of the AA meetings I went to a few times.. but really I wasn't embarrassed or anything, I was trying to change my life and pretty proud to be taking the steps I needed to.
I wasn't embarrassed. It felt good to be a familiar face, being it was his first day. I hope that in some way, the experience puts a face on recovery for him so that he won't feel alone in his journey.
I went to a rehab clinic today and three nurses were from my graduating class...they were friends and got themselves all jobs there. They all said...Darren, what are YOU doing here? Embarassing, but what can you do.
I've run into former teachers, a principal, a doctor, and a fair number of former classmates. Haven't yet run into a former student, but I did out myself to a few who seemed to be having some issues with alcohol. If they ever decide they have a problem, I'd be thrilled if they contacted me. The way I figure, by outing myself, without shame, I've let them know that anyone can have a problem--and there is a solution.

I've run into a few people at meetings, the most recent time it was a former neighbor and our kids played together a little bit several years ago. We recognized each other and talked after the meeting, it was good. I immediately felt like a new him much better then I previously had, there was a bit of a bond there, we share a common enemy.
