Off topic .... sort of. Songs of recovery

So the "Bermuda Triangle" of holidays is upon us. Which means it is time for Mike's most excellent music countdown

These are the songs that represent my recovery in al-anon. First when my wonderful marriage of 20 years ended due to my ex wife's addiction to pills and other women's husbands. More recently when a lovely relationship of 5 years ended because the kick-@$$ biker chick I fell in love with decided that her addiction to anorexia was more important than our relationship.

So here is how I felt when those love affairs fell apart:

( warning, heavy rock n roll )

Joan Jett - I hate myself for loving you
Joan.Jett.I.Hate.Myself.For.Loving.You.avi - YouTube

As I worked thru recovery and learned how to release the pain and turn it over:

Bon Jovi - You give love a bad name
Bon Jovi -- You Give Love A Bad Name [[ Official Live Video ]] - YouTube

And this is what Al-anon, and SR, helped me feel.

Collective Soul - Better Now
Collective Soul - Better Now - YouTube

Enough about me. Let's hear what songs are a reflection of _your_ recovery, at any stage.

Mike

This came out the Xmas before my first sober one, lol

I know I am weird, but it just isn't the Xmas season if I do not hear it at least once on the radio, lol

Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer---Dr. Elmo - YouTube

And I know there are many versions of the following but I still LOVE the original:

Gene Autry Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer - YouTube

You know when I finally found recovery, I really had no 'good' memories of Holidays, especially Xmas as that was the Holiday, more so than Thanksgiving, when ALL the family got together and it always turned into a horrible FIGHT FEST.

In recovery, my first Thanksgiving I was only 5 1/2 months and 6 1/2 my first Xmas. I learned something very important ............................... I COULD MAKE NEW MEMORIES. I have proceeded to do that for 30+ years now.

Mike I go back a bit further than you when it comes to Rock and Roll:

Even my dad liked this one:

ELVIS Blue Christmas (Best Picture & Sound Quality) - YouTube

And this was the recording that my dad finally admitted that Elvis had a BEAUTIFUL voice:

Elvis Presley Peace in the Valley - YouTube

I have Elvis's Gospel Albums and I play them year round but an awful lot more at this time of year.

Thank you Mike for starting this thread, it will be interesting to see what I can add to my collection.

Lots of love and bunches of hugs,

Desperado by the Eagles when my AS was still out there "come back to your senses...." This song was often my prayer
You Don't Have to Live Like a Refugee & I Won't Back Down by Tom Petty....both are self explanatory jmho
Bless The Broken Road...AS' favorite because early on his recovery he found the person he's married to now and feels his broken road led him straight to her...my broken road led me to a greater sense of peace & serenity... and of course drew me closer to my HP

I'm sure there are more for me but it's to late in the evening for me remember.

These are early days for me at SR, so much of what I think about are still ways to change my thinking and to NOT react to my situation and the A in my life... so my music selections are often therapeutic for me.

Some days, the only way I can "reset" my thinking and regulate my breathing is to listen to Peter Gabriel's "Solsbury Hill"... something about the guitar rhythm that helps me.

This one is obscure if you aren't familiar with the artist... it is Amy Ray (of the Indigo Girls) singing "The Tale of Johnny Rotten". As my brother is an addict, this song speaks to me as a family member as well as a codie...

Finally... I am a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas music, but a good "release" song is Manheim Steamroller's "Carol of the Bells"... very rockin' and raucous.

I love it!

I am so glad that I see so many songs on here that would appear on my list too.

Silent All These Years and Tear in Your Hand by Tori Amos...when I knew there was something wrong but could not find the words to say it.

Untouchable Face by Ani Difranco when I was angry but could not find an outlet.

Never Surrender by Rick Springsteen (cheese I know) but played really loud, especially in my car it got me through a lot of hard times....

Step Inside This House by Lyle Lovett when I need to figure out what is important to ME!

Tom Petty in general, but I defer to all the ones previously mentioned.

Bubble Toes by Jack Johnson, Dancing with Myself by Billy Idol, For a Dancer Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, and cheesy 80s music as I heal and just need to dance with my dogs.

This has brought a smile to my face. I feel the need for a recovery mix coming up!

Really do love this thread.

Looking back over the past four years, I have definitely had a recovery soundtrack. These are the songs on my iPod that I have played over and over again. I'm an ACA and have been working on recovering from the affects of growing up in a dysfunctional home. My selection might be a little different.

Awareness / Blame
Kelly Clarkson - Because Of You - YouTube

Acceptance
Anna Nalick - Breathe (2 AM) - YouTube

Forgiveness (Played this song often after my father's death.)
Sarah McLachlan - Angel [Official Music Video] - YouTube

Finding My Voice
Sara Bareilles - King Of Anything - YouTube

Hope
Simon Webbe - No Worries - YouTube

Thank you for letting me share.
