Addiction & Creative Types?

Today in treatment we discovered that several of us are creative types. We have two painters, one actor/writer, one published poet, one florist, one woodworker, and I am a combination of writer/actor/collage artist.

Our counselor said there have been studies done on addiction and how it attracts creative people. I'm curious, how many people here have some creative talent?

There's quite a few I think - I'm not sure it's any greater or less than you'd get with any other large group of people tho to be honest

I too am a creative one. Clay, sculpture, painting, music.
I used to believe being buzzed helped release the creative energy. Now I look at drunken paintings and think they're perfect for recycling into sober paintings.
I tried wheel throwing & glazing drunk, not so good!

Art Major

I think that the creative connection is real. I am going to college for Art right now and know that Art is the only escape that I have found to life other than a drink. Being sober for 35 days has made me want to continue on with school and get my Masters in Art Therapy.

I did a poll on it once awhile back. I'm a painter (along with a lot of other creative things). While I think there's a link I think people need to be careful about saying the two go hand in hand. My Alma mater is the School of Visual arts which often makes the top 5 schools in High Times reviews of colleges to get stoned at. But, having gone there I think some addictive people are drawn to the creative lifestyle which is admittedly tolerant.

I have a lot of artist friends who are successful and making their livings in art and they are just about the soberest grouping people I know. Which is good because as small businessmen that is essential

I draw/sketch. I also condsider myself to be a creative problem solver: I see things that people with more rigid approaches don't see.

I'm glad to see more creative types here on SR. I wish you all the best in your recovery, and I hope using your talents is therapeutic for you all.

See ya,
ZenJen

I've found the most common trait among addicts is addiction...and self-aggrandizing.

Never had a single artist friend who wasn't abusing something... the more creative and the higher the IQ, the greater the propensity there is for some type of addiction... boy I know!!!

Absolutely... the lifestyle is more tolerant. I read someone here say that addiction expands as far as the surrounding tolerance... I agree

But what is creativity? Sure... artistic, musical, whatever... but aren't we all blessed with some degree of creativity?... being creative to find solutions to our challenges, at work, home, play... so Carl also has a good point!!

It's a chicken and egg problem.

Are 'creative types' prone to addiction?
Or are 'addictive types' prone to declaring themselves 'creative types'?

'Irish types' are prone to addiction too :-) (I'm irish, btw).

I've heard and noticed that there is a lot of alcoholism / addiction with creative types. (But I never really heard anything solid in comparison or contrast regarding non-creative types - or what the definition of a 'non-creative type' would be exactly.).... Interesting for sure.

I would consider myself a creative type .. I play guitar and piano, I paint, I write ... None of those professionally, but they are things I enjoy and do fairly well, imho.

I'm a comic book writer (not professionally), so I guess that qualifies me, but I'm not really convinced that creativity and addiction go hand-in-hand.

Creative problem solving, thinking outside the box, dabble in art/crafts,.

High intelligence goes with most of the people I know who are recovering. My opinion.
