Newbie to posting here..
Hello-
I have been coming to this site for about three years now, but this is my first post. I got sober on September 14, 2010 and credit all the great advice on this site for helping me through everything. I never went to AA (not my thing) but I do see a therapist and that helps. Anyway, just wanted to express my gratitude to all that post here for helping me to get sober. Also hopefully I can help some other people out that are trying to get alcohol and drugs out of their lives for good.
A little about my story. I started drinking when I was 13. I was an alcoholic for about 16 years, since I was about 19 years old. I would drink about 12 beers a night and more on the weekends. I always held a job and even had my own business for a while, so I was what you would consider a functional alcoholic. I actually thought all of this was pretty normal, as most of my family and social functions centered around alcohol.
Eventually, everything in my life turned to crap as I turned more to the bottle. I lost my business, my friends and my self worth. My bottom was having a psychotic break in which I had to be committed to a mental institution for about a week. I got diagnosed with borderline schizophrenia and was put on medication. It scared the hell out of me, but in the end it was a blessing. I got sober for about 6 months and felt a lot better. Then stupidly went back to drinking for about 6 months.
Finally on 9/14/2010 I decided to quit.. and I haven't touched a drop since. A lot of my relationships have changed, but I've found my true friends who have supported me and reconnected with old friends who gave up on me a long time ago. I'm still a work in progress, but things are so much better now. I've lost 50 pounds, feel good (most of the time) and am so much more responsible with my life. I guess what I'm trying to say to anyone reading this rambling post is that if you really want to get sober, you can. Just believe in yourself and it's possible. Thanks for listening.

Congratulations on your sober time!
Don't wait a year to give us your second post.
During the past year I bet you acquired some wisdom about how to stay sober. It would be great if you could share that wisdom with the newcomers, particularly since you didn't use AA.
