A very scary death

My friends brother was a very heavy drinker for years. And as a result of years of drinking it caused esophageal varicosities, which is having varicose veins in your esophagus. Drinking can weaken and erode the esophagus.

After not showing up for work a friend found him in his apartment dead laying on the ground face down with blood coming out of his nose and mouth and it looked as if he was trying to crawl to his front door.

Autopsy showed that due to years of drinking the veins in his esophagus ruptured that night and started bleeding out of his mouth and nose and choked to death on his blood.

I think about that often and it scares me from ever wanting to pick up a drink.

Sorry to know this happened....

When it did to me....I required 3 transfusions ...3 days in an ICU..
2 more of hospitalization. t I also have scarring meaning swallowing is difficult at times.
did not make me quit drinking

but I did quit a few months later....

Alcohol kills is a fact.

That IS scary to hear. As you said. It reminds me why I don't want to drink anymore. Right now Im healthy and young but the path I was going down I was going to suffer long and hard and may even live a short life. My sickness never thought of the future but always about just the moment of wanting to drink. I never thought of the possible bad outcomes of drinking too hard myself. Thats a terrible and possibly a very slow death Sorry to hear that. Just glad I managed to stop in time thank god.

This is a re post of mine....seems like a good time to bring it up again

Hi Everyone....

On another thread I mentioned
I had lost 26 friends since I found recovery in '89.

Then I got to thinking ...so many of us
equate drunk driving to alcoholic deaths.
Others assume an alcoholic is jobless
friendless....a nomad living in parks.

My dead friends lived in D.C.
Drunk driving was not why they died.
None was a skid row drinker.

Norman in my bed...a heart attack
He took a legal pain med and had 5 beers.

John P......a suicide ..alone .Cocaine and Burbon

Bob...I found him dead in my apartment
when I came back from vacation.
He had been there 6 days and I did not
realize it was a person I loved.
I had to throw out my carpet and chair.

Wayne...who shared a home with me
I cleaned up his vomit and blood
as he bled to death on his way to ER.

Pat...I last saw him 2 hours before he died of
alcoholism. He was restrained in a hospital bed
raving and yellow.

Leo...I worked with him for 10 years.
He died on the restaurant floor
Convulsing and vomiting blood.

Joe...hit a bridge head on...drunk...in his PJ's..sucide

Princess....froze to death passed out in an alley

Richard ... shot himself in his bottle strewn car.

Charlie ..died waiting for a liver transplant

Stephen and Ann...liver cancer

Jeff and Ted...drunk...alone...found days after death in apartments
Not possible to pin point causes due to body decomposition.

A few had tried AA....2 died recovered

Sooo....while I do stress
"Don't Drink and Drive"
my personal list of who I mourn
has nothing to do with it.

With the hope that someone will save their own life
I share some of my dead friends with you.

Thank you for reading ...please find a
way to live without alcohol.

Wow, Carol. That is a scary eye opener. Alcohol just doesn't kill by drinking and driving and that's usually only what we hear about.

This is scary. Really. I hope and pray I haven't done permanent damage to myself. I keep telling myself it's okay to drink because I have no in-your-face social cause to stop. The only reason I want to stop at all is health. I should really call the doc and get bloodwork done... I get blown off a lot due to being 23 but I don't switch docs because he's extremely good at what he does.

A great friend of mine, and coworker, died of the same cause. He was sober for 8 years in AA. He went back out, and within 6 months he was dead.
I still miss him dearly.

Thanks for your post.

Sorry to hear that gr8t2bme. A friend of mine, Jenny, died this week of alcoholism. Her partner died a year ago, also of alcohol-related disease. Your story and Carol's and Jenny's death make me reflect on the devastating consequences of alcohol not only on the victims, but on their husbands and wives, their sons and their daughters, their sisters and their brothers.... their extended families and friends. These sad, sad stories serve as further motivation to stay sober.

So sorry, that is a horrible story. Actually, knowing that may be in the cards for me if I continue to drink is what has helped me. My husband's friend had the same thing happen and they got in to a hospital and saved him. He drank for 2 more years and died. That poor man. May he rest in peace.

Ghostlight,

That is a tragic story! It is quite frightening that it could happen in only 6 months. God bless him for trying.

CarolD,

I had no idea that you suffered from varices. Thank God you made it. What helped in early sobriety?

Your personal stories are just terrifying and heart wrenching. I think fear can be a motivator. Any time I feel tempted, I need to re-read these entries. I am so sorry for your losses.
