Applying for bar job

I am applying for a bar job this week, and if I get it then I will really be putting myself to the test. Most people who work in bars drink and drink heavy. Just need to make sure I do not become one of those people again. I don't really need to be social though I just need to get a job. Hopefully I land it real soon!

Not really sure why you'd want to subject yourself to that temptation but I worked at a bar before I quit drinking -and I certainly wouldn't work at one now that I stopped.
Good Luck!

Hmm... sounds like a really bad idea, but I guess you know best how to keep yourself sober.

I couldn't do it.

Some folks really recommend staying away from places where drinking is the main focus early in sobriety.

I ended up getting a job once a week working the door. Just needed the money , and the bar owner knew I already knew half the folks anyway.

None of it caused any compulsion to drink, but eventually I REALLY wanted out because of the bad behaivor. Also, it was a juke joint with everyone smoking. That started to be a factor , since I had just quit and noticed it affected my running the following day.

Reading your post, I wonder if your addiction is setting you up ?

Are you very, VERY secure in your sobriety !?

Bar owners love non-drinking, drugging employees. Well, I don't know many personally, so that's just an assumption.

Take care

To protect my early fragile sobreity....I did leave the hospitality industry.
It simply made me uncomfortable.

No I did not drink on the job...I would have been fired if caught...however...
the ambience...quick cash....late hours...grabbing snacks rather than eating
all were not in my best interest.

In D.C. there was an AA group that met at 3:30 p.m. to allow hotel...bar and
restaurant workers to attend. Perhaps you can find something in your area.

In Union houses...drinking was definately not allowed. I hope you are at least going in that direction
The pay scale is better...and you do get benefits not found in non union places.

Also.......check out waiter jobs in restaurants without a liquor license. I did that too....

Dear Mr. Silver,

Welcome, and I hope you'll keep coming back to let us know how you're doing. We care.
In my early sobriety, I was willing to go to any lengths to avoid alcohol and it included taking detours to be as far away as possible from my old drinking spots. I felt that I'd rather be safe than sorry. It worked for me.

Good luck to you and I hope you can get to a meeting before or after your job.

I've been told that if you walk into a barbershop enough times you'll end up getting a haircut...

I've heard of bar tenders that give free drinks for AA/NA coins... While I understand the job market these days is tough, and it's not impossible to work in a bar sober, it's certainly not stacking the odds in your favor. Best of luck.

I wish you the best! Although I feel you're playing with fire & may get burned, especially without working the steps in your life. I interviewed at a bar, I didn't like the atmosphere, sober! Glad I wasn't hired!

Good Luck!
It is better than having no income. I have been out of work since May and Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the country. If I get offered a job I am going to take it.

I can honestly say that I was in a bar 3 days after I quit drinking and did not take anything. The drinks were free and I was celebrating my birthday and I still did not take a single drink. In fact here in Clark County they sell booze 24/7. They sell it in the gas stations and supermarkets. In the casinos the drinks are free. I still don't take them. Now that I have been off drinking for 3 months and know how much better I am without it, I am confident that I can do it and be fine.

I do not look at it as a long term solution neccisarily. I have not ruled it out either though. Right now I do need some income and I have past bar experience with good references.

I eat at a place pretty regularly where the bartender is sober. He seems to do it alright I think he has lots of time though. It's also an eating place with a bar, not a bar with food. Anyways, good luck. It's not impossible but I'm sure it will be very difficult.
