Sobriety has given me...
Tonight I baked a cake for the first time. I found myself sitting around doing nothing and craving chocolate, so I thought "maybe I'll just run down to the store and buy ingredients for a chocolate cake?"
So I did. And it tasted fantastic.
I really hate when people say things like "Now I enjoy the simpler things in life" or "Now I've learned to stop and smell the roses", because they are such cliched sayings and they make me think of some fuddy-duddy retiring in Florida, BUT there is some truth to these sayings. When I was drinking I never would have baked a cake.
So I stopped tonight to think of what I have been blessed with, like a happier life, a healthier life, more peace, etc. My sobriety seems to give me something every day. Sometimes it's the opportunity to learn how to live with pain and hardship in life, sometimes it is inner peace and tranquility, whereas some days I'm just granted the simple things, like a cake.
Today my sobriety gave me a cake. What has your sobriety given you?

Great job, Josh! When I was drinking I never took the time to make any food or meal special. I would always be in such a hurry to get back to drinking, like I was missing out on something. I got frustrated and lost patience just trying to prepare a vegetale. Many nights I just didn't make dinner because it was too much of a bother. Then when I was blacked out I would make the most unhealthy crap at like 2 in the a.m. I would wake up in the morning and see the evidence but have little to no recollection. That was when I knew I really better stop. It's been 10 days and I am present when cooking now and eating healthy at a reasonable hour. So glad we get to enjoy cooking now! It's true, we are "stopping to smell the roses"

Good for you, Josh. Glad you're learning to stop and smell the cake, lol...
Seriously though, why fight it? I think appreciating the little things is one of the keys to a happy life. After all, life mostly consists of little things.
(And for the record, I'm only 44 and I live in California.)

the last year of my drinking was hell. after i had been sober for a few years i looked back and was stunned at what i had allowed myself to become. sobriety gave me my life Back! it's up to me what i decide to do with it.. great thread OP!

I'm at Day 10 "again" and praying I pass this number and never look back. Today I feel peace. Drinking contolled my every thought, when was I going to drink next, and couldn't wait for the day to come and then was hungover, tired, cranky, lazy, unhealthy for days to follow, then it started all over again. The peace that I have now is not consumed with the thoughts of when the next drink is coming, but of the 'simpiler' more rewarding things in life. Like apple and pumpkin picking with my children, working out, watching movies in bed at night and cooking and *gasp* cleaning!! lol

My sobriety has given me more awareness, I turned 43 September 20th and realize how fragile we are as people, I damaged myself for years while not really caring or noticing, I am much more attentive about my health now. It's given me a lot more too, so much more.

Being sober has given me new insights each day. I'm getting myself back more gently this time 'round, and God knows what He's doing in having it that way. I'm digesting real life a bite at a time, rather than feasting on the whole cake at once, and enjoying a short sugar rush. No real pink cloud for me, just real reality.

Sobriety has given me my life back and a lot of new friends that love me.
Never forget eJoshua there is always something to be grateful for, no matter how small. I always tell my sober friends that. The 1st small thing i notice when i got sober was that there was OJ in the frig. Never had that in the frig when I was drinking. LOL
