First Meeting

Hello everyone,

Well yesterday I posted - whilst drinking...I am back at Day 1 again, but I wanted to share with you guys that I went to my first AA meeting.
It was an open meeting and I didn't really know what to expect but I was beyond surprised to see that there were at least a hundred people at this meeting! And everyone was so incredibly supportive. I picked up my first chip and people clapped for me. FOR ME!
I also met this wonderful lady that was there, that was probably around my age, 6 years sober...they weren't giving out the big book there but she gave me her personal miniature copy which has her handwriting peppered throughout it.
I feel like this personal touch lets me pay for attention to what I am reading.
My Mom said to me today that I have to READ it...it isn't a Hunger Games book (lol!) and I have to take in every word that I read...

Anyways...I am going on vacation soon and not sure how to access more meetings but I do know that I will go back once I return.

Tonight my boyfriends Mom is talking to him about the struggles that I am going through. That it isn't as easy-peasy as he thinks it is...
Hopefully he doesn't get mad at me again! We just started talking about yesterdays ordeal.

Anyways...just wanted to share that I enjoyed the meeting. It's nice to talk to people face to face as well that are going through the same thing as you.
But of course, I love my SR forums and all you lovely people on here!
Hope everyone is taking care.
Onto day 2 tomorrow.

Happy to hear how well your meeting went. Congratulations on going!

Yes, it can be surprising how many alcoholics are out there.
The lady you met could make a good sponsor, I hope.

Enjoy your vacation, and remember, you never have to drink again.

Best to you.

Thanks everyone! Means a tun to me.
Big hugs!

Sobermechanic - I was very surprised at how many people were there! When they clapped it was deafening! Lol! And my city isn't even that huge!
But I am sure glad I went.

That's great! Glad you enjoyed it.

Not sure where you are going on vacation, but we have meetings all over the world. It can be fun to experience meetings in different places. Something to think about.

You never do have to drink again.

I like to say "just stay." No reason to go in and out! But it does work. Please keep going to meetings until the miracle happens. It will.

Those people at AA told me to keep comin' back when the rest of the people in my life were just as glad not to have me around at all. I am glad you found some support.

By the way, going to meetings while on vacation is a trip (duh-dum-dum). It's interesting to walk into a place where you know absolutely nobody but you immediately belong there. Meetings are one place I can count on feeling at home when I am not actually at home. I don't need to talk or explain myself; those strangers know why I am there and they're there for the same reason. It's a familiar place to be when you're in an unfamiliar place. Plus it helps with the not-drinking thing.

I look up the meetings on the internet and just pick one and go. Sometimes at hotels the front desk has a list of meetings.

Thanks for letting us know how it went. So glad it was a good experience - the way it was meant to be. You sound very encouraged, & that's great.

I find that the face to face support of AA meetings is really valuable to me.

Congratulations on 1 day! Tomorrow is not promised to anyone.

Internet search: aa city, state (or wherever you're going)

A website with meetings or a phone number may be available. Do your research before you go!

I also haven't been to meetings with that many people unless it was a special event (convention). Treaure that book. I've never seen anyone give their personal book away, either. Buy your own, treasure hers.

Awesome, I am so glad to hear that, Bayliss! Way to go!

Sometimes those bigger meetings are nice because you don't feel as on the spot.
