I as well. One I am presently taking on head first. Day Five is going well though. I am feeling positive and actually not too bad both physically and mentally. I meant no disrespect with my question. I've been reading and watching a lot lately and some people use the different terms so I was just wondering others opinions.

I'm with MycoolFitz; they're just different parts of speech.....if a person is 'addicted' to something (alcohol or drugs), then that person is an 'addict.' See...........? Simple..................

ad·dict /n. ˈędɪkt; v. əˈdɪkt/
[n. ad-ikt; v. uh-dikt]
–noun
1. a person who is addicted to an activity, habit, or substance: a drug addict.
–verb (used with object)
2. to cause to become physiologically or psychologically dependent on an addictive substance, as alcohol or a narcotic.
3. to habituate or abandon (oneself) to something compulsively or obsessively: a writer addicted to the use of high-flown language; children addicted to video games.
It's pretty simple - an addict is someone who is addicted to something and someone who is addicted to something is an addict. Can't separate the two.

I am an addict in recovery. I am no longer using mind or mood altering substances and as far as I'm concerned have no active addictions currently.
Am I an addict? Yes, Im a recovering addict. Am I addicted? Currently, No.

Although I haven't used drugs in many years and consider myself a recovering addict, I'm still addicted to numerous things...some I picked up after putting down the dope.
In the NA SWG, the second question under "Disease of Addiction" asks:
"Has my disease been active recently? In what way?"
Because I'm an addict who has the disease of addiction, I understand that my disease can manifest itself in a number of ways that have nothing at all to do with drugs. It can be mental, physical or spiritual...but my disease is almost always active. Here's a few examples:
[1] I'm addicted to the web - member of at least 7 different sites; post & read daily.
[2] I'm addicted to shopping - this one creeped up on me. I thought I had it arrested but I spent a few thousand this Summer and got stuff with tags still on it yet bought more! Yikes!! 40 pairs of sneakers...(okay, let me shut up...I'm sick. LOL)
[3] I'm addicted to collecting music & movies - an old addiction: 4 -5 thousand CD's, countless DVD's...running out of storage space
I'm a recovering (not cured) addict....still addicted...just not to drugs.

I am an addict. The same underlying issues that caused me to over eat, drug, drink, and chase men are the ones that lead to my tendency to "hoard". I had several collections, hoarded pets too. Some how, one was never enough. I felt like I had to build a fortress of stuff between me and my internal hollowness.
I've not ever been addicted to one particular thing, I would use anything that I could as a shield between myself and the big bad world. I still use things, but being more aware of it, I am able to address it more honestly.
One of the things I loved about NA right off the bat is that it deals with the disease of addiction, we dont care what you used or how much, but only about your problem and what you want to do about it, and how we can help. That was music to my ears!
