OT? - I swear this was on the front page...
This story was on the front page of the Houston Chronicle this morning and I still can't wrap my head around it...
A patrol officer stopped a car because the driver was weaving in and out of his lane. As he approached the car he noticed the windshield was smashed in and there was a dead body in the passenger seat, partially crumpled under the dashboard and his leg had been severed. The driver had blood splattered on his face and was clearly intoxicated. It was 12:30 a.m.
Apparently the driver had just exited the freeway where 5 minutes earlier he had hit a pedestrian whose car was broken down and was trying to cross the freeway. He hit this pedestrian, the guy came crashing through his windshield, landed in his passenger seat, and the DRIVER WAS TOTALLY UNAWARE that any of this had taken place until the officer pointed out to him that there was a dead person next to him.
He is being held without bond for failure to stop and render aid and faces 50 years in prison.

I'm not. In the fall of 1981 they pulled a guy over for DUI.
His BAC was .52
He swore he only had 2 drinks.
It was his 7th DUI, and he was driving w/o a license or insurance.
He ended up getting a 25 year sentence.
He died in prison, 4 years later of Cirrhosis of the Liver.
Nothing a practicing alcoholic does any more surprises me.
Here in NM up in Albuqureque on Xmas Eve in '98 or '99 a fellow was driving the wrong way on I40 and killed a mother and her 4 children.
He had a trial and was sentenced to life. Appealed.
Got retried, trial was moved from Albuquerque to here in Las Cruces, again sentenced to life, and appealed again, and again and again but the 2nd conviction was upheld.
I was on the jury of the second trial. Somehow I got through all the questioning and there was no objection from the DA or the defendants attorney, I was really surprised, because the questionnaire that had to be filled out before died have questions on it about being an alcoholic and familiarity with alcoholism. I was honest, and neither attorney ever asked me one question about my answers, go figure.
He was an Alcohol counselor on the reservation, and had gone back to drinking about a month before the accident.
I was one of those alcoholics, completely oblivious to what went on around me. I should have gotten many DUI but somehow didn't. I lived in my own 'reality' as most alcoholics do. It was my HELL here on earth.
Today I don't worry about heaven or hell, as I have already done my time in hell, there is only the other alternative left for me as far as I am concerned.
Sending out prayers to the family of the man he killed.
Love and hugs,

The first time my XAH was in rehab there was a guy in there who had been arrested a week before on the interstate. The police had another car pulled over and when he approached it he thought the blue lights were for him and he pulled in behind the police car. When the officer asked what was his problem he said, "You pulled ME over." The rest of the story did not go well for him.
Thanks for fishing out the link. It was on the hard copy print on my desk--I tried (and failed) to find a link when I posted the thread.
