Just read this quote... seems to sum up alcoholism to me

"You don't drown by falling in the water; you drown by staying there."

True.....but some have the ability to swim out of the water whereas others don't know how to swim / can't swim.

Ha~ nice quote. I could see that as meaning also that your life might not be ruined if you can swim to the shore. Regret of wasted time can be difficult for me but I know that negative emotions are a barrier to recovery.

Sometimes I think that it was necessary for me to tread these waters. Sometimes I think that I learned things that I would not have learned otherwise. Other times I'm just bitter about the time I lost. I try not to be bitter; that is its own waste of time.

Sometimes I feel as thought I haven't made it all the way out of the water and I'm standing at the shore knee deep......

Absolutely. I would not be the person I am today had I not done the things I did yesterday. Everything is a learning experience. Mistakes are made to learn from. Second chances are given because your time wasn't ready for the first one. There is a plan.
Eventually, we get it. Eventually, the lesson fits within our realm of thinking and we get it. Sometimes its too late but other times it makes us stronger and makes the journey more of an edventure.
Life is a sequence of events...things happen the way they should as they should if we let them. There are no coincidents. You are exactly where you need to be this exact second in this unverse.
