Sleep, Nervous Energy, Meditation
I've been off the booze for nine days after active drinking. Could anyone give me a guess as to when the nervous energy and difficulty sleeping will end? I'm sure there's a range, but any hints would be helpful.
Also, has anyone tried meditation to relax? I was also thinking that it might even provide a temporary "escape from self," which I think is a major factor in addiction, but I am not sure it functions that way.
Thanks.

I too had difficulty with sleep in early recovery.
Have you tried some sort of exercise (not within several hours of bedtime).
Yoga is a good low impact exercise. Walking is as well. Those are easy to do without a gym membership.
You can also consult your doctor and let him/her know your situation and see if they have suggestions.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, yesterday, for example, I lifted, walked for two hours with a family member, and then went rollerblading. I was totally spent at the end of the day, could barely keep my eyes open, but still couldn't sleep. I can handle this as long as it goes away soon. A couple of weeks would be great. Thanks again.
Any further insights appreciated.

happyplace, it will get better and soon. i am on day 10 myself and today was the first day where i felt content... and i plan to have a good night's sleep (we'll see how that works out).
of course everyone is different, but if you are able to handle some physical activity you are on the right track.

Hi Happyplace. Congrats on your 9 days, or I guess it is 10 now. Everyone is different in how they physically recover from drinking. But based on my experience and what I've read here, you should be nearing the end of your anxiety and tiredness. If they don't go away soon, maybe you should see a doctor. That may be a good idea anyway, since most drunks don't make regular doctor visits.
Here is an old thread on meditation if you are interested. Best wishes.
