I was just perusing the summer vacation photos of an acquaintance (not really a friend) on facebook and most of them were of her and her friends drinking, being wasted, doing beer bongs - stuff like that and all I could think was "gah, I am SO glad that's not me anymore!" All of the people were visibly wasted and in many of the photos, they were actually drinking (ice luges, keg stands, all that good stuff). I can't believe I used to 1. do that kind of thing and 2. think posting pictures of it was EVER a good idea! I guess when you're that age (she's not even 21 yet - I used to babysit her...which just makes me feel OLD) you think that kind of thing makes you look "cool" when most people are just looking at it thinking what a ridiculous fool you look like. I was almost embarrassed for her. I'm so happy seeing stuff like that boosts my drive to be SOBER (added bonus: I also don't have the inevitable "hangover/day after" photos, either!)
SO thankful to be sober and NOT have pictures of me wasted all over the internet (erm, anymore...there used to be quite a few a couple of years ago)!! By the way, I'm now at 10 full days sober and once again properly medicated under the care of a psychiatrist/addiction specialist and a therapist!!

UGH! I know whatcha mean. My daughter has a couple friends that befriended me on FB and I don't even look at their page or pictures. It's all tongue, cleavage and doing odd things. Why do the young folk think they look attractive sticking their tongue out in every picture while holding a beer bottle. I don't find that fun anymore!
And it's forever engraved on the internet. What memories.

I have a few old friends from high school on facebook who are actually 46 year old women. One in particular has a drink in hand in every single photo. It doesn't even look fun. She's either doing jello shots, pounding beers, wine bottles galore, beer pong. Even before I got sober, I thought for gawd's sake...grow up. Even better...there was an album on her page for a memorial "party" for one of our former classmates who died from liver failure. Sure enough, all the classmates in attendance looked like they just pounding drinks like it was a big party. I probably sound judgmental, but I'm more trying to so how insidious alcoholism is. That is just crazy looking from a sober perspective.
My brother died of alcoholism in March of this year. I was "Friended" by his friends on FB and I was shocked to see all of the hardcore drinking and public displays of it thinking "this is cool". Believe me I have seen my fair share of drinking and done it myself - this was nothing on the scale.
I was hoping his death would serve as a wake up call to his friends that this disease can KILL. It did kill my 37 year old brother. The most disturbing part is that after his death and fully knowing what he died from they posted "oh, he knew how to make my favorite drink!" or countless other drinking buddy stories. Sadly none in his group have changed or have even thought to make a change.
For me personally, losing my brother on my 5th day of sobriety myself made my recovery that much more important. It completely changed my life.
I feel the same as defyinggravity in saying I am SO glad this isn't me anymore.

A former drinking buddy who is now a 58 yr old man friended me on FB and every picture he has on FB (other than those of his dogs) are of him and his friends partying, they've always got drinks in their hands and that 'glazed over' look on their faces. It's not cute in your 20s and it sure as h*ll isn't cute in your 50s.
I so agree w/all of you but I will be 100% honest with you I have a little over 7 years of being sober/clean and sometimes when I see stuff like that it looks good and I miss it, but I think it through and I know the consequences are not worth it.
I know in earlier sobriety it made me ill and angry, but I guess w/time that feeling diminishes for some of us?
It talks about it in the Big Book to, about how we get upset when we see others drink w/impunity.
Seeing as I am far from a BB thumper I have no clue where it is other than off course in the 1st 164 pages
Peace & Blessings
