6 days sober: 5 days off work...what do I do???
Today at work, I found out that I begin serving a 5 day suspension tomorrow, unpaid. Today was my 6th day sober. I fought off the initial urge to drown it in booze, but I am truly worried about the next 7 days. What is there to do, possibly for money if not for sobriety, on a weekday? Does anyone know if they drug test at the work today-pay today places? It's only been 2 weeks since I smoked weed. I'm trying to occupy my time, and not be too far behind when payday comes. I'd settle for not being drunk the whole time.
Hi CMC and welcome to SR. You will find a tonne of support here.
I am sorry to hear of your difficulties right now, but the important thing to remember is that a drink will make nothing better. Focus on one day at a time, staying sober only for one day makes it far easier to put those days together.
Keep on checking in here, it helped me hugely in the early days, still does in fact!
Look forward to seeing your progress. Welcome again.

I don't know anything about temp places in the US, but I'd look into it.
I wouldn't worry about drug tests.
Try not to panic - there's a lot of us here who spend our days at home and we manage just fine - SR is always here when you need support
Volunteering is also a good and useful way to fill in time if nothing paid pans out.
Have you considered a recovery programme like AA or whatever? A meeting or two might help to fill in some time as well and might be useful too

Go to your local library and take a look for books on recovery and spirituality. Take advantage of the time off to move forward with your recovery.
And, I am a huge advocate of volunteering.

When I lost my job on January 27th I had a whole week before my first AA meeting. I decided that was a good time to just chill. relax my brain, relax my soul and definatley not make any rash decisions. Just relax.
I started drawing again...continued AA, I spent ALOT of time here once I found it. I signed up for rehab and didn't worry about getting a job right away. I focused on me and getting my life on track. I didn't start my next job until April and I am already being considered for a supervisors position after less than 2 months employment. I already took the test and passed and am waiting for the 'position pool' to open so I get interviewed.
It's just awesome getting life started sober...just enjoy your time and just do what YOU want. (as long as you financially can!)

Hi Call: Sorry to hear about the employment issues--I understand how stressful that must be and of course, the first impulse is to drink. DO NOT DRINK is the message that I want to hear on these boards, so I am sending it back to you. I am six days in as well, and have taken up walking to fill time, look at the scenery, say hello to people who smile at me, and just generally have some gratitude. Easy to say, right? But I swear it works. I am also making a list of AA meetings that I plan on going to in the next week, especially over the weekend when things get really tough. Hang in there, we're all in this together.
thanks ya'll. Really, I woke up wanting a drink. I know it is not an option, that's the only way I can think. Need to go to the library and also to temp service today. Going to chow now. will check in later
without AA i am unable to do it alone. i have found a place that is like no other. that isn't to say it is disney land, but it's 8:34 AM here I FEEL AWESOME and i don't want to drink or anything else, i am jonesing for a meeting!
Hi CMC-
I was suspended once, for peeing dirty at work b/c I smoked weed.
I knew it was a possibility for a long time and I was finally caught.
I eventually got fired from that job (GREAT job, 11 years seniority, management, travel, etc...) b/c I didn't stop drinking (or doing coke).
This could be a turning point in your life or just another slide down.
My best advice is to go to AA and immurse yourself in recovery.
You see, the same me will drink again, and again, and again, no matter how hard I try.
Maybe this is true with you too?

Hi CMC-
I agree with Mark. A beginners meetings would be perfect.
...but just like most things in life, you'll need to go to a few different ones and find out for yourself.
The important part is the going
Please let us know how it goes for you.
