My song of the day....

Kenny Chesney's "That's Why I'm here"

YouTube - ‪Kenny Chesney - That's Why I'm Here‬‏

Here are the lyrics.. it's all about an AA meeting... makes me cry EVERY TIME. I wish my AH would actually "hear" it when it's on.

No I ain't had nothing to drink
I knew thats probably what you'd think
If I dropped by this time of night
Remember way back when
I promised you I'd drop in
At one of those meetings down at the Y

Well, they started talkin bout steps you take
Mistakes you make
The hearts you break
And the price you pay
I almost walked away

You could hear a pin drop
When this old man
Stood up and said I'm gonna' say it again
Like I do every week
For those who don't know me

It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I've been there, that's why I'm here

This ole boy stood up in the aisle
Said he'd been living a life of denial
And he cried as he talked about wasted years
I couldn't believe what I heard
It was my life word for word
And all of the sudden it was clear

It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I've been there, that's why I'm here

I know for us it may be too late
But it would mean the world to me
If you were there when I stand to say
It's the simple things in life
Like the kids at home and a loving wife
That you miss the most, when you lose control
And everything you love starts to disappear
The devil takes your hand and says no fear
Have another shot, just one more beer
Yah, I've been there, that's why I'm here
Oh, I've been there, that's why I'm here

Well, those kind of songs always just made me sadder.

When I was going through separation and divorce, I discovered some empowering songs that helped lift me up when I was feeling down. This is one of them.

YouTube - ‪Joss Stone-You Had Me‬‏

Lyrics:

You had me
You lost me
You're wasted
You cost me
I don't want you here messing with my mind

Spitting in my eyes and I still see
Tried to keep me down
I'm breaking free
I don't want no part in your next fix
Someone needs to tell you
This is it

Hey
Listen you'll be missin'
Out on all my love and my kissing
Make your mistakes on your own time
When you come down you're just no good to have around
Instead of making money you took mine

Chorus
You had me
You lost me
You're wasted
You cost me
I don't want you here messing with my mind
I've realized in time
that my eyes are not blind
I've seen it before
I'm taking back my life

You tried to trade on my naivete
But the things you do and say embarrass me
See once upon a time I was your fool
But the one I leave behind he is you

Hey
Listen you'll be missin'
Out on all my love and my kissing
Make your mistakes on your own time
When you come down you're just no good to have around
Instead of making money you took mine

Chorus

Vodka and a packet of cigarettes
That's all it used to be but now
You're sniffing on snow when you're feeling low
Suffocating dreams that could have
Maybe for a minute I'd be down with that
But it didn't take long for me to see the light
You swore you had control of it
But when I stepped back you slipped on your supply

Chorus

Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Ain't nobody got no business stressing all the time
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life

Chorus

Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life
Ain't nobody got no business stressing all the time
Taking it back I'm taking it back
Taking back my life

Ths is my first time hearing both of those songs. I love them both - for very different reasons. Thank you for sharing.

I've been listening to Ani DiFranco and Neko Case a lot lately.

http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4e4iEZH56G0

Stinging Velvet - Neko Case
Rain falls, I fix my eyes
Let go of the focus and I blur out all the lines
Just to remember, remember

Crying 'cause it's not my fault
Water through my lashes look just like Christmas lights
And I still remember, remember

Cold and shivering
Cold and shivering
Cold and shivering warm

Sing please, rock me to sleep
Quiet as a canyon up under heaven's eaves
I surrender, surrender

Downstairs the furnace swells
Safe from all the horrors in your stinging velvet arms
And I surrender, surrender

Cold and shivering
Cold and shivering

Can't Heal You (F-bomb warning)
Five Finger Death Punch

[V1:]
The deeper you get, the farther you fall down
The closer I get, the more you dissolve

[Pre-Chorus:]
You're lost inside, your pale addictions
Bury you, with the demons in the ash

[Chorus:]
Can't heal you, don't want to
cause you can't save your-f$*^%'-self
Can't heal you, don't need to
cause you won't save yourself

[V2:]
You are the one who made the decision
stuck in a prison, shattered and broken
I am the one who, expected to heal you, save you from drowning in your endless nightmare
Blessed be, the disillusioned
The banished misfit and the cursed hollow son

[Chorus:]
Can't heal you, I don't want to
cause you can't save yourself
Can't help you, don't need to
cause you won't save yourself

[Pre-Chorus:]
We're taught to perish but fade away
Become the haunted and die as slaves

[Chorus:]
Can't heal you, I don't want to
cause you can't save yourself
Can't help you, don't need to
cause you won't save yourself
Can't heal you, don't want to
cause you can't save your-******'-self
Can't heal you, don't need to
cause you won't save yourself

Codie Theme Song: Jenny Lewis - You Are What You Love
(Really pretty song describing a terrible, chaotic, codependent life.)
YouTube - ‪Jenny Lewis - You are what you love‬‏

This is no great illusion
When I'm with you I'm looking for a ghost
Or invisible reasons
To fall out of love and run screaming from our home

Because we live in a house of mirrors
We see our fears and everything
Our songs, faces, and second hand clothes
But more and more we're suffering
Not nobody, not a thousand beers
Will keep us from feeling so all alone

But you are what you love
And not what loves you back
That's why I'm here on your doorstep
Pleading for you to take me back

The phone is a fine invention
It allows me to talk endlessly to you
About nothing disguising my intentions
Which I'm afraid, my friend, are wildly untrue

It's a sleight of hand, a white soul band
The heart attacks I'm convinced I have
Every morning upon waking
To you I'm a symbol or a monument
Your rite of passage to fufillment
But I'm not yours for the taking

But you are what you love
And not what loves you back
So I guess that's why you keep calling me back

I'm fraudulent, a thief at best
A coward who paints a bullsh_t canvas
Things that will never happen to me
But at arms length, it's Tim who said
I'm good at it, I've mastered it
Avoiding, avoiding everything

But you are what you love, Tim
And not what loves you back
And I'm in love with illusions
So saw me in half
I'm in love with tricks
So pull another rabbit out of your hat

Another song about how sad/ hard it is (switching it up with some R&B flavor this time hahaha):

YouTube - ‪Usher - Moving Mountains‬‏

USHER

"Moving Mountains"

It's like whatever I do,
Ooh
Just can't get through to you
Ooh, ooh
I'm never gonna tell anything wrong
Ooh, ooh,
Listen
Oh

Now, now she loved me, shawty I loved her
Used to jump up in the Maybach and roll out
Used to care, she used to share
The love that she used to give me can't be found
I lost my way, she said she'd stay
And lately I've been sleeping with a ghost
My stock is down and out, I used to be worth my weight in gold
That was before a great depression kicked in and rocked us
And that was before the hurricane came in and stopped us
I told you to leave, but you lied to me
When you said that, baby no worries I promise to get us back

[Chorus:]
I know sorries, just wouldn't do it
Her heart is obliterated, I'm trying to travel through
But it's like moving mountains...
It's like moving mountains... hey.
But I keep climbing and hoping things would change
And the sky turns gray, and the water from the rain washes progress away.
It's like moving mountains... (moving mountains)
It's like moving mountains... (moving mountains)

[Hook:]
Why just leave me?
Just leave me be
Just leave me
Just leave me be
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be, ooh, ooh
Be, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoaaa, whoa

She, she don't touch me, I don't touch her
We rarely even ever say a word
I really want to give her everything she deserves
But the bad took away the good
She thinks that I'm full of it, arguments, always pissed, man I'm tired
Every kiss that I miss, girl you know I'm trying
You never believe when I say, and I never believe it when you say
I love you, and I shouldn't complain about it
I should take it like a man and walk up out it
Cause we will never be the same, ooh
I've been standing in gas and you have been the flame

[Chorus]

[Hook:]
Well baby why you just leave me?
Just leave me be
Just leave me
Just leave me be.
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be, ooh

This must be a slow death that I'm traveling on
It feels so wrong, I'm barely holdin' on...
See no matter what it takes, I've gotta get it together, baby yeah
And these hills that I'm travelin' up
She ain't showing me love
I'm down on my love
Oh, I'm down
Whoa

[Chorus]

Well baby why you just leave me?
Just leave me be
Just leave me
Just leave me be
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be
Why you just leave me
Just leave me be, ooh

One that helped me get a taste for freedom: Soundgarden 'Rusty Cage'

So good even Johnny Cash did a cover version:

You wired me awake
And hit me with a hand of broken nails
You tied my lead and pulled my chain
To watch my blood begin to boil

But I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Too cold to start a fire
I'm burning diesel, burning dinosaur bones
I'll take the river down to still water
And ride a pack of dogs

I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

Hits like a Phillips head Into my brain
It's gonna be too dark
To sleep again Cutting my teeth on bars
And rusty chains,
I'm gonna break my Rusty cage and run

When the forest burns
Along the road Like God's eyes In my headlights
When the dogs are looking
For their bones
And it's raining icepicks
On your steel shore

I'm gonna break
I'm gonna break my
I'm gonna break my rusty cage and run

for Bookworm

"You are absolutely gloriously perfectly imperfect whether a single other human holds you in their thoughts right now or not. You are completely deserving of the space you take up on the planet simply by virtue of breathing. No one else has the power to define you."
GiveLove

Thanks everybody for posting these songs.

Bookworm, I love the quote you have. I think it's what I needed to start off my morning.

Joe Walsh has a One Day at a Time that I love. My wonderful husband put in on my ipod before youtube disabled the sound on all the recordings. It is my favorite cool down song for my running program. I'll see if I can find the words.

Well you know,
I was always the first to arrive at the party, ooh!
And the last to leave the scene of the crime
Well it started with a couple of beers,
And it went i dont know how many years,
Like a runaway train headed for the end of the line.

Well I finally got around to admit that I might have a problem.
But I thought it was just too damn big of a mountain to climb.
Well I got down on my knees and said 'Hey!' (la la la)
'I just cant go on livin' this way!' (la la la)

Guess I have to learn to live my life one day at a time.
Oh ya! One day at a time!
Oh ya! One day at a time!

Oh ya! One day at a time!
Oh ya! One day at a time!

Well I finally got around to admit that I was a problem.
When I used to put the blame on everybody's shoulders but mine.
All the friends I used to run with are gone, (la la la)
Lord, I had'nt planned on livin this long. (la la la)

I have to learn to live my life one day at a time!

It was something it was too blind to see,
I got help from something greater than me..
And I have to learn to live my life one day at a time!

Givelove used to post here a lot with many, many wise words. I miss her. This quote though, really made a difference to me when my self esteem was non-existant - it became my affirmation for a number of months and I even put it on my screensaver. Its been my sig for so long now that I kinda forgot it. Thanks for reminding me!

OK, it's not a theme song, but I set my iTunes to shuffle and it played the following (which I'd completely forgotten about). It completely cracks me up everytime I hear it and thought I'd share it. (mild language warning - I don't listen to it with DS around and probably shouldn't have had it playing in my office at work)

YouTube Liam lynch- the happy song
Happy by Liam Lynch

I am really special cuz there's only one of me
look at my smile, I'm so d-mn happy, other people are jealous of me
when I'm sad and lonely, I like to sing this song
it cheers me up and shows me that I won't be sad for long

oh oh oh I'm so happy, I can barely breathe
puppy dogs and sugar frogs and kittens, baby teeth
watch out all you mothers, I'm happy, it's hardcore
happy as a coupon for a $20 wh---
ha-ha-ha hah

I'm really happy, I'm sugar coated me,
happy, good, anger, bad, that's my philosophy

Spoken: I can't do this, man. I'm not happy.

I am really special, cuz there's only one of me
Look at my smile, I'm so d-mn happy, other people are jealous of me
These are my lovehandles, and this is my spout,
but if you tip me over, then mama said knock you out

I am special, I am happy, I am gonna heave
welcome to my happy world, now get your sh-t and leave
I am happy, I am good, I am...

Spoken: I'm Outta Here! Scr-- You!

(Just typing it out makes me snerk...)

Such an frightenly accurate portrayal of how XAH lived the last few years together.

Birds of a Feather by the Civil Wars

Where she walks, no flowers bloom
He's the one I see right through
She's the absinthe on my lipss
The splinter in my fingertip

But who could do without you?
And who could do without you?

She's the sea I'm sinkin' in
He's the ink under my skin
Sometimes I can't tell where I am
Where I leave off and he begins

But who could do without you?
And who could do without you?

Oh, we're a pretty, pretty pair
Yes, we are
All, all the king's horses
And all of his men
Couldn't tear us apart

Dancing with a ball and chain
Through it all we still remain
Butterflies around the flame
Till ashes, ashes, we fade away

AH was listening to that Kenny Chesney song on his iPhone is morning... He was sitting quietly, thinking. I chose to walk the other way and to a different part of the house.

As I mentioned before, he's bumping up against something (based on things I see him doing) with his acceptance of the drinking problem.

I, in turn, have learned to do something VERY amazing.... SHUT MY MOUTH and KEEP IT THAT WAY!!! I listen when he wants to talk, nod and say, "hmmm" when he says something that might trigger my "FIX HIM!!!" addiction! I see it so clearly right now... And not just his drinking... But his health issues, his laundry... All sorts of his stuff that I mistakenly tried to control in the past. The divorce process has really helped me see the "line" between us.

I've also slowed myself done... Tortoise and the hare. I was feeling rushed, and jumping to decisions, instead of listening, watching, working on patience and waiting for more to be revealed. I felt like I was forcing solutions... And it wasn't working for me. I'm still making forward progress ( tortoise!)... but at my own comfortable pace. Working on honoring me, and evolving from my codependency.

That's all for me, for now...

Hope you are all having a good weekend
