Cannot take it anymore
I have been going to therapy and meetings for about 3 months now. I am on meds (naltrxone, celexa, campral). I started on antabuse but I continue to drink on it. I cannot stop. I hate how I am living my life but I cannot stop. What is my next step. I thought that antabuse was the last straw. That was it... no turning back. Intensive outpatient? Inpatient? Do I need to have withdrawal symtptoms for inpatient. The majority of my family have issues with alcohol and I cannot count on them for help. I just do not know what to try next.

Diha, sorry you are struggling so bad. I think your next step would be getting in touch with your doctor as soon as you can. If not get yourself to ER. Mixing alcohol with antibuse is very dangerous. Also some of your other meds may not be good mixed with alcohol.

wow that is quite a concoction of drugs! are you really taking all of those at the same time? Are you skipping any? I used naltrexone a couple of goes back and found it actually worked...but then I stopped, see the problem with these pills is that you can just choose not to take them easy peasy! My last drunk, I went into detox for a week, didnt go on any meds but have stayed sober since. Ive also tried all the drugs your on, done inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, a.a, support groups, but this is the place that has kept me sober...reading heaps of posts! Stick around :-)
Also I was 3 days sober when I went into detox so I had done most of the withdrawals at home (not recommended or safe), you dont need to be drunk when you turn up to detox (funny how many people think this). The accept you if your asking for help and you need it.

Yes I am taking them all. I had a meeting tonight. I drank after antabuse and I was completely flushed and could not breathe. I am better now. I do not usually get those symptoms. Still not enough to stop me though.

That's just it, we had the exact same thought as you. We wanted to stop drinking, but couldn't...I mean how insane does that sound!? Don't ever feel alone in this thought, your no different :-)
I would seriously suggest going to your gp, being honest about your your drinking on the anti drink drugs and just say 'they arent working, we need to try something else'. He might be able to refer you to a specialist who can give you options and write you a referral to in inpatient centre if you feel this is where you want to go.
We cannot know whether something will work until we try it and what is the worst thing that can happen? It doesnt work...but hey you gave it a go. What is the best thing that could happen? It work's. You just need to find what works for you.
Im sure others will have more ideas on what helped them stopped, what worked for them. I know personally for me, it took many many falls, I got up and tried again, every single time. Im not saying this will happen to you, im just saying I had to try different thing until I found what truely worked for me... that admitting AND accepting that I was completely and utterly powerless over alcohol. I could choose to live, or die. I wanted to live so so so badly. I chose life.

I think you should consider inpatient diha, if you are not managing to look after yourself. There are people who talk about the 'window of opportunity', you should go while you have the motivation to do so. Be upfront and tell them everything that is going on.

Have you read the book named "under the influence"?, the section under 'What about antabuse?' is interesting, the whole book is worth reading. Antabuse works by interfering with the liver breaking booze down, be carful drinking on that stuf.

I agree with the above--be honest with your doctor so that you can be safe and get the right medical supervision.
When I first got sober (I have since relapsed after nine years) it took intensive outpatient, which I am considering now. I was ready to do anything to stop drinking and so many of us have to reach that point for it to work. This time around, nothing has worked for me, so I am changing my approach, like lizmine said to find what works. Hi, hope this helps a little. As stated mixing alcohol with your meds is deadly.If you have made 90 days it seems you have the desire to stop. You have to help yourself and surrender to win. If insurance is an issue, then when you aren't drunk because they can refuse you if you are, then call 911 and they have to treat you in the emergency room and then they will send you to detox. Please by all means this approach is free and will hopefully save your life. All of us are suffering from this disease and it is a matter of life and death. No ER visit tonight. I just have a headache. I will call the psychiatrist tomorrow and try to get in asap. I also work at the hospital in town and would not want everyone to know. Thank you for the concern. It feels good to know that I am not alone.

Here's my 2 cents. I really wanted and needed to go to an inpatient facility but I needed to get an assessment for referral. I went to a place in town for an assessment that only does outpatient treatment and they recommended outpaitent - of course. I finally got my own doctor to recommend inpatient, she found a place that could room me, and I was there in a couple of days.

There are rehabs that offer places for parents and their kids. My mother took my kids while I got well. I was extremely lucky and am so grateful for this. I guess she could have them for the time I got well or could have them for the rest of her life cos either they would of eventually been taken off me or I would of died from my addiction. Anyway im not sure if you have any support like this but you need to reach out, you deserve it, your kids deserve it. Rehabs can be months to years. Its whatever works for you and how well you work with the program. I seriously would not be worrying about your job, your priority now is staying alive and keeping your children. What is the point of a job if your children are losing their mother to addiction. I get that kids cost money but there is help...I hope you seek it.

I went on short term disability from my company - to my knowledge, it's a requirement that companies allow this under the FMLA. My insurance only covered 11 days - but they were the best 11 days ever. It was worth every dime it cost me. Yes, it set us back a bit financially, but I know it's only short term after looking at the math below.

I really think you getting well now needs to be your only priority - if you do not, then everything else you hold dear - jobs, family, health - will suffer. That's a certainty.
I hope you'll speak to your Dr and canvass all your options. Don't dismiss anything.
