Starting over from scratch

Not really new here. Use to post over here for a while. Just forgot my old screen name and password. Got about 8 months in felt fine and pretty much drifted away. Eventually alcohol reared its ugly head again and took no time to slip back into old habits. Made a few unsuccessful attempts to get a hold on it again. Had a month one time but mostly just a few days clean before I slipped right back into it.

At least through my drunken haziness I still felt this calling inside me that I can't go on living like this for much longer. I'm still a young guy at 31 but I don't want to see my 40's and 50's and beyond come and go and live like a drunk through them all. Wasted my whole 20's doing that and I regret that whole decade. So I have been researching more on the addiction. Came to realize that this isn't just as simple as put bottle down and never pick it up. It's like training for a sport or learning a new instrument. You don't just do it for 30 days and you become an expert. It takes constant practice of years to become good at it and even then there's always room for improvement.

So right now I'm still shaking off a hangover but come tomorrow I got my game plan set to launch and hitting my first AA meeting. Not sure I'm going to become a life long member but it a step in the right direction. Also can anyone suggest some reading material helpful for the recovering alcoholic?

Welcome back
As you're going to AA, I think the Big Book is a good thing to read

Hi, yes, I can suggest some reading material!

Start with the book Alcoholics Anonymous.

If you do not have a copy yet, you can read it online. You can purchase one at the meeting you are planning to go to.

I am so excited for you!

Yes, recovery is something we have to work on each day. Thank God we get this opportunity as it is so much better than living the alcoholic life.

You can do it!

There are also some daily recovery readings posted on the 12 step forum.

Welcome back!

I got alot of good information out of a book called "The Craving Brain" by Ronald Ruden.

I really like your comparison of recovery and training for an athletic competition. If you want to be successful you must practice everyday.
