Valium while in treatment? WHy?

Hi there. I have a question/concern about my husband while he's in rehab. He's about 3 hrs. away in a treatment center that his psychiatrist recommended. His family is paying out of pocket for the 30% that insurance does not cover. They want to, with good reason, be sure their money is being spent efficiently. I spoke to him briefly yesterday (mostly business) and I could tell he sounded messed up. It was day 5. I asked if they'd given him valium and he said yes! Now, I'm not a specialist in substance abuse or mental health, but this seems totally counterproductive to me. He said it was for his anxiety. I don't know what he's going through while he is there, but even if he's experiencing anxiety, I can't help but think he's simply manipulating them and they are falling for it. Don't these people know that they are dealing with master manipulators? I guess I'm just wondering if this is common. I hate to see family paying for rehab that's "a joke" We all tried to research this facility and what we couldn't get any real info other than their own literature. Your thoughts?

If you are on his "approved" list for his counselors to speak to, perhaps you could talk with them to understand what's going on. If you aren't on his "approved list, there is nothing you can do.

During those times when my son's addictions concerns me most, I try to remember to turn my fear into faith.

I'm sure this is very difficult for you. You are not alone.

Sedatives are very commonly prescribed during early detoxing for minimizing withdrawl symptoms. Usually the person is weened off after a short time.

I was given Librium after 2 days of white knucling it and feeling like I wanted to jump through a plate glass window.

I guess I should've stated that his D.O.C. is crack. I had considered that the valium was possibly for withdrawal symptoms, but my understanding is that there's not significant physical w/d/

There may not be physical w/d symptoms but his brain and central nervous system is still messed up and freaking out.
