Can it be done?

I would like to live my life substance free, liquids powders fumes, nothing intoxicating.

I have been dependant on substances for over 30 years. Im tired of it but dont see any other way, 36 hours is the longest I have ever been without something that leads to something else then something else.

It used to be fun and not really matter, but Im not getting any younger and wondering is it really worth it. No its not, but I dont know any other way of life. In my time I have been to this anonymous and that anonymous, counselling, motivation classes, etc.

It all seems so boring, I have been in the high life and the low life, now i'm in nowhereville. I can motivate myself to stop but I cant stay stopped, one leads to another and back to the eternal square one.

Anyone been there?

Welcome, Burgessian!

I think it can be done. I'm glad you found your way to SR. Maybe you can find something here that can get you past that 36 hour mark.

None of the anonymous this or that, or counseling, or motivational classes is going to do you much good if you haven't made it longer than 36 hours clean.

Try going back to NA, or AA, and doing the deal. One meeting, or meetings high, or meetings alone aren't going to perform any miracles in your life. Taking the steps can--and will, if you follow through.

Peace & Love,
Sugah

I think a lot of us have been there Burgessian.

Eventually I realised that, however painful it would be, getting sober would actually be less painful then the life I was living...and I might just save my life into the bargain.

You'll find a lot of ideas and support here.

Welcome
D

I did not get sober until I was 35 years old. That was after drinking for 20 years or more. It can be done. It is rough when you first start sobriety but stick with it as it does get easier to stay sober the longer you stay that way. Life changes and new opportunities become available. Hope to see you stick around here at SR as there is a lot of support, experience, strength, and hope here.

Hey Burgessian. If you can't make it past 36 hours on your own, I think rehab would be a big help to you. Just my opinion. Good luck.

It's not an easy decision at all.
If it was we wouldn't need this place and places like AA, NA etc

I think support is really important - vital even - so I hope you stick around.

Welcome, and I think talking to a dr is a good idea too.

And, yes, you can do it. I think it's important to remember that stopping using whatever is just the beginning. I had to make big changes from the inside out, in order to recover. There is lots of support here, so keep reading and posting.

Welcome Burgess! You say you will check back here IF you make it 36 hrs..so that says that you are leaving the door open as to whether you stay sober or not. I think in order for this thing to work..you have to want to be sober more than you want to be high/drinking whatever your DOC is. I hope you stay with us..I know just reading all the posts and the sticky notices kept me occupied for a long time..heck I still miss some things. The support here is incredible. So keep posting and reading..I wish you well!!!
