I think expectations can cause a lot of pain.
In my recovery, I have tried to be much more aware of expectations and to try to step back and let a situation unfold, and I can observe without have expectations.

Yup, that is one of the expressions I've heard for many years (I think I first heard it in Al-Anon, but it applies to everyone), that has helped me a LOT.
It not only helps to avoid expectations, it helps us to understand some of our resentments (i.e., that they are sometimes the result of expectations we had no right to assume).
