VC, I am really sorry. Your cat is in pain and knows you love him. If you feel this is the right thing to do, then you must accept that. It takes strength to take that step. That is admirable. I will pray for you and your cat.

Hugs VC...I know this is really hard for you. I am guessing you are taking him to the vet today? I hope there is something to do fr him and that you don't have to put him down yet.

Keep us posed, sending you and kitty positive thoughts and prayers!

Vicious, the only thing that usually works for me in situations like this is to focus on the absence of suffering as a good thing. It doesn't mean I can get through painful thoughts with flying colours, but it's a crutch.

Hi VC-

I too have a cat and I grew up with them. I've always had a cat(s) around.

Making a decision to put a pet down is hard, but I would take him to the vet and let them give you their advice as they know best.

Either way, it sounds like you've taken good care of your cat and in return your cat gave you unconditional love. What a deal!

Hi VC. I've been through this with a 17-yr. old cat years ago. I couldn't remember life without her. After she died I cried for 2 days, saw her everywhere. Finally it hit me, that this dear friend of mine, who'd been by my side through all my ups & downs, would never want to be the cause of my tears. In honor of the many years of friendship that we'd had, I tried to go on - the way she would've wanted.

I'm sorry you're hurting. Your cat has had a lucky and long life - he had you to care for him & to do the right thing for him. I know you will see your friend again, VC.

Wow, I know how much this hurts. I had to have both of my 20 year old cats put down one week apart from each other. And, yes, I cried a lot. I will pray that something can be done for him. I can tell you that it was much harder dealing with my babies suffering and my own grief in the days prior to the end. After they were laid to rest I was able to focus on my grief and work through it. I know how hard this is and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your baby.

I also saw Alli for a week or so after she passed away. I think her spirit hung out with me for a while. I know I will see her again someday.

Sorry it hurts so bad.
When I've had to take a pet to the vet to "put to sleep" I sobbed like a baby. I even cried when I had to take my guinea pig! With my collie, I couldn't bear to stay in the same room with her. With one of my cats, I caressed her head and spoke softly to soothe her as they gave her the injection. Neither way was any easier than the other. I just had to keep telling myself we had had a grand time together, and I was doing the right thing for my "friend".
In any respect let yourself grieve.

I've been thru this also, too many times to count. This poem expresses exactly how I feel. I hope it can ease your pain. I too felt awful about making such a hard decision, but in the end, I always did what was best for the animal. I cannot let them suffer.

SEPARATE LIFETIMES

We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality
, never fully
understanding the neccesary plan....

Thank you VC.

I never grew up with pets and
and all I heard was you don't
wants pets because....then u
hear all the negative stuff about
them.

I had those negative feelings
and thoughts for many years
until one day I was blessed with
2 cats. Lucky and Gus.

Never in my wildest dreams
could I imagine life with out
them. God put it on my heart
to love and care for His creatures.

I got them when we were living
in Houston and I brought them
back home with me to Baton Rouge.

Yes, they have been with me
thru thick and thin and so much
unconditional love.

I hope that when God takes them
that I will be strong and remember
that the soul rises from the body
and lives on in a better place and
the flesh remains on earth.

All of us pet lovers have something
awesome to look forward to down
the road when we all will be reunited
with our pets at Rainbow Bridge.

How AWESOME is that.

I went through the same thing a few years back. Had my cat for 16 years, and then we found out she had feline Luekemia and that it was too far progressed to do anything about it. Our vet had told us that once they stop eating and drinking (which she had started to do) that it was so painful for an animal to die of starvation and would be a long painful death and that we really should consider putting her down.

I went into the room and stayed with her while they put her down. It was like she just went to sleep peacefully. For me, I was a wreck and hysterical then and for months after. Steer clear of people during this time that don't have pets and make comments that "it's only an animal ect..". Stay away from these people they just don't get it.

As much as I understand exactly what you're going through, and how painful it may be. This is how I got through it- You need to realize what an amazing life you had given your cat. If it wasn't for you would it have been in a shelter all it's life, a stray ect?
Instead of just thinking of your loss, think of this. Think of how because of you, your cat had a warm home, food and water, and lots of love his entire life.

The other thing is... get this book as soon as you can..
All Pets Go To Heaven: The Spiritual Lives of the Animals We Love, by Sylvia Browne

I'm a true believer that our pets have souls and are waiting for us on the other side.
