Hi, I decided today is the day that I stop. I have been hurting myself and others with this for far to long. I'm done with alcohol its not fun anymore. I've been destroying my life with it, missing school and work to either drink or because i was hung over. I can't do this to myself or others anymore. Last night was the worst night of my life, the detoxing was terrible. I thought I was going to die. I am determined never to do that to myself again.
Welcome to SR! Pull up a chair and spend some time reading the "stickie posts" at the top of this forum. Also, reading the posts of others can help tremendously.
This is a great place to meet people who understand exactly how you are feeling since most of us have been pretty much where you are at a certain point in our lives. You will find a lot of support here. Again, welcome to SR!

Hey strontium, and welcome! This is a great site. I found it the day I made the same decision as you have made, and I've been here and alcohol-free ever since.
I'm not going to lie, I really enjoyed drinking. A lot. Alcohol was my best friend. It was with me all the time, and without it I was unhappy and anxious. But today it's the total opposite.
I realized alcohol wasn't my friend but rather my enemy. It didn't want to lift me up; it wanted to bring me down, and it did. Again and again and again.
I hurt the people for whom I have the most love. I lost jobs and ended up in jails. And I'm eternally thankful that I didn't lose my life or cause anyone else to ruin theirs.
You can stop drinking, and there are people here whose experience and support can help you do that. As for the detoxing, if possible, I highly recommend speaking to a physician. Withdrawals from alcohol can be dangerous and in extreme cases deadly.
Again, welcome, and thanks for being here! I'm very glad you are.

Way to go! Wise decision. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repetetively and hoping for different results. Make us wonder why it takes so long to quit drinking and why we would be willing to go through detox more than once. LOL
Personally, quitting was not difficult to me. I felt guilty about my past. The roll model I was being to my 18 and 14 year old, loves of my life. And my insanity ended up costing me a dui and the rolling of an awesome hobby car. Attorneys costs around 5k, pending license suspension, fines etc. These are what I now face because a car in front of me slammed on brakes, causing my to take evasive action and run off the road.
Anyways, what's done is done... I owe no thanks to Alcohol and create no affectionate illusions about my past drinking. My goodbye didn't involve a last toast of any sort.
You seem optimistic and strong spirited, just from the way you posted this. Good for you.
May you look forward forever and backward never.

"They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing repetetively and hoping for different results. I wanted to post that again because its exactly what I've been doing - and your story seems too familiar. This is insane. Hang in there! Lets get better and in three months plus maybe we can help others.
Hi Scrontium - welcome to the family. Congratulations on your very wise decision to kick alcohol out of your life. It was once fun & my best friend - but that was decades ago. Wish I'd had the sense to stop instead of trying to control it, while my whole life went down the drain.
You can definitely do this, and we're with you all the way. Let us know how you're feeling. A whole new day will dawn for you, no more insanity.

hey thanks for welcoming me! Its been a week now and I'm still sober. There were a couple times this week when i wanted to go get some alcohol and drink, but remembering what that night (and the next two days) felt like helped make the decision easier as did reading messages on this forum. Thanks for your support and I'll definitely be around for some time.
