Very Glad to be Back
Hi Friends:
I found SR in January 2008 a few weeks after I had quit drinking for the first time in over 30 years. I found the people and their support here to be very helpful and reassuring during a scary time in my life. Alas, after a few months I stopped coming to these forums, never attended a single AA meeting and after about a year of "white knuckle sobriety" I relapsed. Within a month I was drinking at least as much as I had most of my life. Three months after that I was also addicted to painkillers and tranquilizers.
127 days ago I checked myself into a 28-day resident rehab program and have not felt it necessary to take a drink or drug since that day. What is different this time? I now know that I am an alcoholic, was born an alcoholic, and will someday die an alcoholic...addiction is a disease that doesn't go away just because you stop drinking. My sobriety depends on a constant vigilance and commitment that kicks me in the seat of the pants any time my disease tells me that it might be a "good idea to take just one drink/pill."
Anyway, I couldn't get to an AA meeting tonight so I remembered this site and the excellent people I met here and who inspired me over two years ago, so here I am. It's fantastic to see so many people still around from those days.
Thank you SR and thank you newcomers...reading your posts is keeping me sober for another day.

Welcome back. Don't forget, you had a years worth of sobriety, then you fell off, and now you have 127 days. It all adds up to a lot more sober time, than drunk time. Which is good!
Some people can stay sober after quitting just once, for others it takes hundreds of times before things click. I'd say you have something special going for yourself because things are making sense, and you have the self-awareness that is crucial for recovery

Welcome back GF! Glad you are with us and you have our support.
Thanks for sharing your story and I so can relate to it. I too found SR and started looking for support but soon stopped everything. Kinda thought I had it I guess but maybe at that time it was the shock and awe that I could really get sober. What I didn't get was that alcoholics are much more then just drinking.....there is a whole lot of thinking we do that doesn't get fixed just by quitting and doing nothing else. Didn't get me very far sadly so I went back down the hole but knew I had to try anything positive to get me out so back here I came. I added face to face support and have been working on my recovery ever since.
There is a better way and I am grateful to be here and so glad I reached out!
