Running to Recovery
Hi! Just wondering if there are any runners on here that are using running as a road to recovery.
I have been running for as long as I can remember. I have always loved running and loved competing in local races.
For years I was able to drink in moderation and get up the morning and run. Over the past few months drinking was getting in the way of my running. I would wake up from drinking wine the night before and not really feel up to running. Of course drinking wine messed up other parts of my life also but running was a big part of my life.
Now that I have stopped drinking I am back to my daily runs and I plan on running a half marathon next month.
When I am out running I say to myself that every step I take is a step forward in the right direcrtion. It's a way for me to focus my energies in a positive direction.
I would love to hear some stores from others who have beaten this addiction (alcohol) with exercise, running in paticular.
BTW...just got in from a 5 mile run and I feel GREAT

Hey Butterfly! You better come on down to our fitness forum! We have runners walkers cyclists ultrarunners weighlifters...it's a good group. We're called "Kicking Asphalt"
I'm with you all the way on running. I love it, just need to get my daily run in and be consistent. I got very used to running hungover and it's just wrong and nasty.
Nice work on that 5miler! I, um, was too tired to do my daily 2m yesterday.

Where is your fitness forum?
I am retired (I know I'm way too young for that...lol) but I am going to fill out an application today to get a job at the Y. I am there everyday anyways so why not earn a few bucks. I think it will be good for me and help with my recovery.
I am also into weight lifting which actually makes me feel even better than running. Don't get me wrong, I love running but it's HARD...lol.. even after all these years. Of course the holidays haven't made it any easier with over eating. I think I was compensating for not drinking by telling myself I deserve to eat that piece of chocolate pie...lol... But now of course it takes a lot of work to take off even 1 pound and if you're a runner you know how much a difference each pound makes it harder to run.
When I was working full time and then going to the gym after work I really didn't have time to drink too much. When I stopped working I had more time on my hands so I drank more. It seemed like party time for a long time with many good times then things went south. For me keeping busy is the key and exercise fills a big part of my day.
Have a great day!

Hey Butterfly
I love running too but don't do any competition running. I tend to stick to the treadmill as I am a tad clumsy and the road is hard
I run 3 times a week and I am up to 4.2km each time now. Not sure what that converts to in miles. Building up to 5km which i should read in a couple of weeks. I do weights on the other days but always have Saturday off.
Running is definitely a huge part of my recovery. When I get on that treadmill I feel all my stress disappear. I also love feeling fit again

Yes, yes, and yes. I run and work out and it's been most helpful in my recovery.
Not a "big" runner, mostly just a few miles and I usually run 5 to 10k's, but I have a love/hate relationship with it.
