Struggling Through It

Hey Everyone,

Today I am struggling. I am on day 6. I went to the store to day. Had my hand on a bottle of wine... put it down... picked it back up... put it back down. I left all my groceries there and walked out of the store. Then once home... made the decision to go back to get the groceries. Instead I made a great dinner with what little stuff I did have in the house. FAUGHT hard to not go back and get that bottle of wine. I stayed home... and I am NOT going back for that bottle of wine. Even though EVERYTHING in me wants to.

Just had to put it out there...

Hey, on day six also. Didn't really understand when others were craving alcohol until today. Don't know what good advice I have, I'm gonna stick it out today.
You can to.

You'll thank yourself in the morning, Saliena. Hang in there - each time you get through a craving you'll get a little stronger. :ghug3

Whenever I struggled in the early days I made myself promise I'd at least read my old posts first before I drank again. It worked for me, Saliena

Wink

I do all my shopping at one local grocery store. It's a block away and I like the walk. As soon as I was back on my feet after this last little 4 month slip, I told each cashier (and they all know me) to not sell me any alcohol. Period. That fixed that part of things.

Good for you and your being strong Saliena! Something I did and am still doing, I never go near the beer/wine section in the grocery store and here in Virginia, they only sell hard liquor in state run ABC stores. I changed the routes I take to drive places so as I do not even drive by those places! Probably abit overkill but taking No chances. In the past, even with the best of intentions, I found myself just pulling into one of those stores saying "screw it!", and buy a bottle after a great start, setting me back to day 1 and a world of self loathing. Well, I am tired of that...
Stay strong!

Oh I can remember that struggle. Buy it, don't buy it. It's awful. I've gone home with the bottle of wine and felt nothing but miserable that I failed once again. So for the first month of recovery I stayed as far away from alcohol as I could. That included stores, parties, and anywhere alcohol was served.

IMO I would try not to torture myself with the temptation this early in your recovery.
Good for you walking away!!

Thanks everyone. I did tell the hubby that he was going to have to do the shopping today. He was totally supportive and encouraging. I did make it through the whole night even though it was the hardest night yet.

There is a Wal-mart up the street from where I live they are close to a school so they don't sell wine or beer. I think I may be doing my shopping there for now on.

yes, i was going to suggest that you change grocery stores...this way your focus will be on seeing the new products.

they do not sell alcohol in my state's grocery, but i switched to a mall that did not have a liquor store with it even though it was out of my way and unfamiliar. the store right across the street and on my route home from work has the liquor store right next door....too close for comfort that first couple of months.

Smart move to change grocery stores until you are comfortable enough to pass the booze aisle at other places. Keep on keeping on there - I've been confronting my demons by revisiting each store I used to stop at on my 'route'. It's really empowering when each one asks me 'no beer today' or 'aren't you gonna get a beer?' and I just smile and say no, I stopped drinking. Walk out with a Dr. Pepper and snack feeling like I just confronted the devil and won.

Good for you.

You know, where I live, you can buy alcohol at the grocery store too. I used think that was just so convenient. I could do one stop shopping. And I could use the grocery store as an excuse to buy my wine.

now, it sucks. Most days it is okay. but it is too easy. I need to buy food for my family. I hate that I have to pass two full aisles -- in the middle of the store -- stocked with my drug of choice. Now I wish I lived somewhere that grocery stores couldn't sell it. Oh well.

Stay strong. you can do it.

where there's a will there's a way. unfortunatelly! I found every place I could buy liquor, waited patiently on Sunday for 12:30 to arrive so I could go to a bar (they don't sell liquor in Georgia on Sunday in stores) if I didn't stock up the night before, and I found gas stations that will sell it as early as 7 am in the morning.

It was really getting so ridiculous it was insane.

Do I want to be sober today
more than anything? I sure
do..!

I'll do anything to stay sober
and not get back on that roller-
coaster or merry-go-round today.

Reading your share reminded
me of how cunning, baffling
and powerful alcohol or drugs
is.

It's amazing how thoughts of
it creeps up on us by surprise
and entertains and plays with
our mind.

Sooooo crazy isn't it?

Many times when those crazy
thoughts pop in I say my Serenity
Prayer over and over again.
Continueing to say it as I
block out everything else in
my mind.

Close ur eyes and feel the
words seep inside you. Before
you know it, those alcoholic
thoughts quickly fade away.

If again they pop up, repeat it.

My recovery belongs to me.
It's mine and no one elses.
I stay sober for me, myself
and I.

It has more meaning to it
because it's personal.

It will get easier as time
goes on as many with a
few many days added together
sober or clean will share
with you.

Whatever u did today to stay
sober, wake up and do it again
tomorrow.
