Thumbs up TOPIC: War Wound Stories In Recovery

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely
grateful.

We all have some sort of war
wound story we sustained during
our drinking or using careers.

Would you like to share some
of yours with SR?

Anywhere's from pounding ur
fist thru the wall, or kicking
something to break a toe, foot.

How about this one from me.....

Driving home at 2 am from
a club running off the road
thru a construction site hitting
a 2 ft notch cut out in the road,
and plowing into a concrete
culvert sitting on top the ground.

OUTCH..!!!

I was cut out of my wrecked
car and taken to the hospital
in the back of an EMS truck.

Do I remember that unusual
trip? Nope. Darn it.....

It was my first and only ride
in an EMS vehicle and dont
even remember it.

I spent 10 days recoverying
from surgery with them removing
my punctured spleen so I wouldnt
bleed to death.

Had numerous broken ribs
and bones along with contusion
from head to toe. WHEW..!

I healed up almost perfectly
at home in 3 months with pain
pills....no alcohol.

Once healed i thought it was
safe to drink again....

I took a sip and off and running
I went back to the same club
staying out till 2am.

Think I learned my lesson
the first time?

In 3 months my progression
of alcoholism grew extremely
rapid that i wanted to end
my miserable life till family
stepped in with an intervention.

They did for me what I couldnt
do for myself.

Saved my life.

Now it's your turn to share.

I was driving home from work one hot August day in 2005, I wasn't technically drunk at the time but I had been up drinking (alone of course) until about 2 or 3 am the night before and had only slept a couple of hours before going to work; I was extremely hung over and could barely keep my eyes open. So I was driving home on a highway and apparently passed out and drove head on into a concrete barrier; I have no memory of any of it. Spent a week in the hospital with my head cracked open -dislocated both ankles and broken ribs; then another 2 weeks in a rehab hospital because I couldn't walk or care for myself; then I was home for another month getting around using a walker-- then when I graduated to crutches I went back to work and of course back to drinking. I don't remember much at all about the 2 yrs following that I had financial problems due to the accident I was drowning in debt and drowning in alcohol.

OMG!!! Both of you are just _So_ lucky to even be ALIVE!! I've had it So easy by comparison! _Never_ drove drunk as I would lose my job clearance, but alone in the house... Watch out! I have been in a walk in urgent care clinic 7 times in the last 18 months for various broken (minor) bones, and assorted stitches; You can just guess what my condition was when _all_ of those self inflicted injuries occured!

Best of luck to both of you and your sheer survival!!

..Mike

Thanks Sharon, and the others on this thread, for sharing.

I could list a lot and most, if not all of them, would be fairly unoriginal. The things that stick out to me are the things I did that embarrassed me. Like waking up with dread as the realization of what I texted or e-mailed hit me.

Someone on SR wrote something I read months ago. I cannot remember who, and I'd love for that person to tell me who they are and show me this post so I could copy it down to keep. It was so relevant. I paraphrase here - It would have been easier for me to wake up, grab the phone, and hit the redial button to apologize for what I said the night before.

I did so many things that I am embarrassed for. So many things contrary to who I am and what my morals stand for. Many things I don't dare write about.

I have read on SR that some people do not like threads like this. That they think it hurts recovery to rehash things like this. I disagree with that. IMHO...we need to remember these things.

Thanks Sharon! God bless you. I'll always remember your story of waking up to that phone ringing.

Rehashing. That's a good word
to think about. I suppose I
rehash or maybe relive things
from the past as a reminder.

It's ok to revisit the past cause
in recovery we don't want to
close the door on it completely.

Remembering the past help
to prevent making the same
mistakes. It allows us to examine
what happened back when
and if changes need to be
worked on then its there like
a manuscript or manual.

Same as if you have to fix
something on ur car, truck
or motorcycle. If you have
an older midol vehicle then
refering back to ur manuel
will help you buy the right
parts to fix it.

I need my manual of past
life to maintanence on my
self.

Have to keep things running
smoothly day by day.

Im glad you remembered
about what I shared awhile
back about awakening by
the phone ringing next to
me when the kids failed to
wake me for their last day
of vacation bible school.

You'd be surprised when
you share honestly as to
the impact it may have on
another.

When someone remembers
something you've shared
and you don't, then you're
being responsible sharing
How It Works or your own
ESH with the newcomers in
recovery.

Thanks SR for helping me
stay sober one more day.
