Hello, new here and looking for direction for my son. Here's his background. He's 28 and a kidney dialysis paitent, been on dialysis for several years and dealing with kidney disease and failure for about 10. He was in a severe car accident in April and developed a raging Staph/MRSA infection soon after requiring surgery. He's developed congestive heart failure in the mean time.
About three years ago his idiot doc prescribed Neurontin, xanax and muscle relaxant. He started abusing the xanax some time ago and had gotten off it since his new doc wouldn't give him any more. He started buying it on the street when he needed it. He's now going to a pain management clinic and wow, they are addiction just waiting to happen and it did. He's now eating the neurontin (about 120 in a week), a pain killer like percoset (50 in a week), 2 muscle relaxants like candy. He's spinning out of control, plus he buying more on the street. He's pretty much non functional most days. He is due to go for his testing to be put on the waiting list for a kidney and I think this set him over the edge.
I don't know what direction to go in since his addiction is prescribe by doctors. They fed him the xanax for years and never asked why he was having panic attacks or anxeity or helped him to get off of it. I live several states from him and his wife is at her wits end and doesn't know what to do either.
He is on Medicaid and disability.
Please some direction. Thanks

Another Mom Here to Welcome You
Have you considered doing a family intervention with your son ?
It is tough watching your child slowly kill himself, I know as my son succeeded.
Do what you can to get your son the addiction treatment that he needs.
Alanon helped me a lot. You can find meetings in your area via looking for directory online.

Hi DaisyLu,
Unfortunately, some Doctors are not the brightest knife in the drawer when it comes to prescribing pain medications, or anti anxiety meds.
My husband also attends a Pain Clinic, mostly for nerve blocks for his back. Thankfully, his Dr. is VERY conscientious of prescribing meds.
Is it possible your daughter-in-law can express her concern to the Pain Clinic?
Hugs and hugs....

Welcome to SR......you'll find a lot of support here. No matter what age our children are, it's hard to watch them struggle with drugs. Your son has so many other issues on top of that....I can't imagine.
gentle hugs

Wow..he has alot of legitimate issues going on. I saw someone on Intervention that had rhuematory (sp?) arthritis and was abusing her pills. They said it is the hardest kind of addiction to treat..they sent her to a place w/ a specialist in addiction and disease management. Probably not super easy to find, but if he agrees to treatment he will most likely need special care. My daughter is an addict too, I feel your pain. I really would try alanon or naranon meetings. They help me alot.

Hi DaisyLu
Welcome to SR. This is a great place to learn how to deal with YOUR feelings. People on here show compassion and genuinely care for each other. They will laugh with you, cry with you, and sometimes ask the REALLY hard questions....but I think you will find, that it is a good place to be.
