Relapse

This is something I know about. I spent decades in "the shoebox" You know, with all the slippers, loafers, and sneakers. I had collected so many white chips that my home group actually called me and asked for some back cause they were running out of them. I liked the term "relapse" it made my drinking sound like an accident. Actually, each time I went back out it was a calculated, well thought decision on my part. Each time I went out I was amazed that all this bad stuff would happen to me, what a coincidence huh? Its gonna be different next time was my motto. Well no such luck. This is what was told to me by an old timer about relapse. Imagine waiting in line for hours to see a movie and it turns out to be the most horrible movie you ever saw. Now as you exit the theater you get back in line to see it again. Thats what I was doing every time I went out.

I too thought i could change the way i drank and it was on my last experiment that i hit rock bottom and lost everything i cherished in life. For the next 2 years i lived a horrible existence till finally i crawled back into the rooms of AA and today thanking God im 1 year sober. Peter

Your movie analogy is right on target, much like the saying that "you can't solve problems using the same thinking that got you into the problem" or words to that effect. You have to approach the 'problem' from a different perspective or you'll be stuck in it forever.

I have had that experience. Every time, without fail, that when I drank I found myself doing it. There was no escaping the fact that it was me getting myself high. No amount of denial, rationalization and creative explanation could some how take me out of the equation.

Great thread!

I think it took me a long time to know that drinking was no longer an option. Once I accepted that, my mind started searching for alternative ways to deal with life. It was a start.
