Greetings from betterlate
Hi everyone, I'm betterlate (than never).
I've been lurking here for a few months and have finally decided to give drinking the heave-ho. I've been drinking for approximately 25 years, somewhat off and on, but mostly on and mostly heavily. As many of you have already experienced in your own lives, the problem has worsened over time.
I've been wanting to quit drinking for a while, and seeing people start sobriety here, maybe fall down and then get up and keep going has been a real inspiration.
I'm on day 9 now and I'm already feeling better.
My handle comes from the fact that I turned 49 last year and all of a sudden 50 was staring me in the face. And this problem that I'd wanted to go away for so long was still with me. I felt great remorse and like a true failure. And what did I do to assuage those feelings? Yes, you guessed it, I drank. And drank. All of which started to become pure torture.
What changed? Bit by bit I looked around at friends who were older than me and quite sober and realized I could be like them if I wanted to be. Some of the more mature posters here were very inspiring too.
I've begun to attend some meetings, and although I've tried AA, LifeRing is also available where I live and that's working for me. Plus, I consider this forum a kind of meeting, which I can conveniently attend any time of the day or night.
SoberRecovery has become a real treasure to me and I very much appreciate all the time everyone puts in on it.
Yours in sobriety,
betterlate

((Betterlate)) - Welcome to SR!!! You did better than me, I lurked for more than a YEAR I had attended AA meetings, in the past, though I'm an addict, but SR and a few f2f people are my main source of support. I think whatever works for you....go for it!
I'm close to the same age as you, and though we may not be spring chickens any more, we have a shot at many, many years of a great life if we choose recovery. I've got a little over 3 years, now, and each year gets better and better.
I'm glad you joined us..there are some fantastic, supportive people here, and I've made friends all over the world, thanks to SR. It's great to be able to come here, 24/7, and know that someone is here.
Oh, and congratulations on day 9!!
Hugs and prayers!
Amy

Hi and Welcome!
Good for you for deciding to live a sober life. And yes, I sure found that alcoholism is a progressive disease and relentless.
You will find lots of support here, so keep reading and posting.
