insane

This is my blog post from Jan 2009 in the middle of doing my not drinking 5 month stint, these were, as far as i could see, the major changes in my life that i had to make in order to stay sober...

So a new year! I am so excited about this year and want to do so much, the following are things i want to do for now:

1. start spanish lessons
2. quit smoking
3. get fit again
4. read more
5. get a back tattoo
6. save money
7. do well at work

Will read this periodically and see where i am!

Insane or what?! Thank God for AA!

Nice list.

How many of those things did you end up accomplishing?

We should all make similar lists and check them next year. What a great post!

My list for this year would be something like this:

1. Get out of doubt
2. Produce at least one feature film
3. Complete the three documentary projects I started
4. Lose 15 more pounds
5. Repair and maintain relationships with family and loved ones
6. Start building financial security for the future
7. Create more loving relationships, both with friends and romances
8. Have at least one more good year with my dog who is now nine years old (he had terrible health problems in 2090 and I thought I was going to lose him)
9. Have 2010 be my first completely alcohol free year

We'll see how much of that I can actually do!

Nope not even that, the list for early sobriety, i.e. first couple of years IMo should be:

1. get and stay sober

thats it...the rest comes as a by product anyway:-)

Darn, Yeahgr8!

I was hoping this was one of those, "See! I did it!" posts. LOL

So sorry to hear your year didn't work out the way you wanted. But I love your last post and you're absolutely correct, only one real thing on the list.

Yeah it wasnt to catch anyone out, i could not see that i needed to get to grips with the insanity of why i was doing what i wwas doing and the only way that worked for me are the 12 steps of AA...point is without going on about AA is that a drastic personality change is required, so much so that a list i wrote in the insanity would be completely different to a list i would write when restored to sanity...

The year actually worked out better than i could ever have planned, i've been sober since last July:-)

Sunset,

You may have missed the irony of yeahgr8's post. All those things he thought he should do to get sober, not only didn't get him sober, but now they strike him as insane thinking.

How often do we see similar lists from people here in early sobriety? How about things that sound plausible, like getting our careers in order?

Yeahgr8 found that a vast revolution in his way of thinking was required for recovery. Polishing up the edges of life rarely brings about that revolution.

Sobriety has to remain No1 priority.

I agree with you that everything else really comes as a by product to that. Without their sobriety an alcoholic has nothing, only another inevitable binge around the corner ready to bring all of those 'plans' crashing and burning down. Rinse and repeat cycle over and over.

An alcoholics life cannot be rebuilt untill there is total and utter surrender to king alcohol. As long as booze remains an option then nothing of any merit will be accomplished.

Good post
