What do you say...

What do you say when co-workers or people who don't know you well ask about your child who is an addict? "What does he/she do?" "Is he/she dating?" "Any grandchildren in the future?" Oh my God...if they only knew.....I am simply thankful he has not killed himself yet....
I say "well, he's got some issues to work out... and there's always hope!"
"Miss Manners" had a great piece of advice about how to answer any question that made you uncomfortable--answer with: "Why do you ask?" In other words,... it's NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

My son spent a yr. and a half in rehab in Arizona In the 1st part of treatment the requirement was that he be taking classes. The last 6 mos. he had to have a job and classes.
If people asked I would tell the truth "He is living in AZ." or " He is working in AZ"
The fact that he was in rehab is my son's story to tell and coworkers don't need his details.
Before recovery there would be long stretches I didn't see my son.
I would just say my son is busy living in ____________
