Thumbs up TOPIC: Answer Fran or Tim

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

By the grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since 8-11-90.

For that and you I am truely grateful.

At the beginning of a meeting the
chairperson announces a topic for
the group to share on.

Words of experiences, strengths and
hopes are heard from various members
thru out the meeting for an hour.

After the meeting you aproach
Fran or Tim and introduce yourself
and share some words of hope and
encouragement and something that
you observed and what concerned
you.

"Each time you heard the word God
do you realized you squirmed?

You do believe in
God, don't you?"

"As a matter of fact," says Tim
or Fran, "I don't. I'm an atheist
and would strongly object to folks
trying to convert me. I suspect
that means there's no room in
the AA program for the likes of me,
is there?"

How would you answer Tim or Fran?

I'm not in AA Sharon, but I don't believe AA tries to convert Christianity on anyone do they? They refer to a HP I thought and that HP is to your understanding only. It just means there is something bigger then you that you can turn things over to or at least I thought that was the case.

Hey
I cant speak for AA. I just know my experience with AA. First I am a Christian, so I hear you (I like all religions). I can speak for myself, I had no problem with the Higher Power concept of AA- I think it's 100% right on. Take it easy. Don't over analyze- you want to stop drinking I assume (like me). AA is pretty awesome in that
  • you dont have to say anything
  • you are with people that have the same desire
  • its only one hour
Thats pretty cool. There are a lot of people there that range from 17 to 80 yrs old. A good base of knowledge in my opinion. Love and Peace!!!!

also I have found that in my meetings people don't talk about religion. Give it a try.

I would tell them that nothing could be further from the truth and assure them there is room for everyone.

I would then start qualifying them.

"Are you an alcoholic?"
"What does that mean to you?"
I would begin sharing my story, concentrating on the allergy/obsession.
"Does any of that sound familiar?"
"Give me some examples"
"Have you tried quiting before? Tell me what happened"

In short, I would try to help them identify in, instead of compare out.
