Spencer-Alcoholic

Hi, I'm Spencer and I'm an alcoholic.

I have no idea how to quit drinking. I've tried AA, it just doesn't work. I also don't like that I'm 20 and the youngest one at every meeting.
I basically almost killed myself two nights ago cuz I was blackout drunk and then took my meds. A horrible mixture. And now I'm back drinking again.

I would love to be able to live a life without alcohol but I do not see how! So I thought I'd stop by and check this place out.

Welcome Spencer.
It all starts with putting the bottle down and getting through whatever withdrawal and detox is coming your way. See a doctor. I was a blackout drinker as well. It was only after my mind cleared up a bit that I was able to formulate a plan for sobriety. First things first, though. Seeing a doctor or even going to an E.R will help you for a safe detox.

There are lots of recovery programs out there for help in quitting drinking. It can be done without a 'program' too. Lots of people on SR use only SR as their program to recover. Lots of others use a mix of different things. For me, I use SR, a bit of AA, an addiction counselor once a week, and meds for my mental illness.

I agree with the advice about seeing a doctor for help in getting thru the withdrawal as it can be dangerous.

As far as staying sober once you've gotten thru detox, I was told by a very wise person here that you've got to want to be sober more than you want to drink. Whey you get to that point it should be a bit easier to stay sober.

I welcome you to SoberRecovery and wish you success in getting and staying sober. It's the best thing you can do to make your life better.

Hi Spencer
Welcome to SR

This place helped me look at my options and helped me stop. I hope we can do the same for you.

I encourage you to look through this list at various recovery programmes...

http://www.soberrecovery.com/forums/...resources.html

You'll find a lot of methods being successfully utilised here....there's also things like inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, counselling...

In my experience, if you have the will to quit and stay quit, you're well on your way.

Welcome Spencer!

Glad to see you reaching out as I was where you are when I was 20 and it took me another 25 years before I got sober.

I can't go back and make a new past but I can start where I'm at and make a better today and hope for tomorrow.

I was in such unbearable emotional pain with my alcoholism and just wanted the pain to STOP! I was willing to do whatever was necessary to get myself out of that hell hole.

AA and an experienced counselor worked for me (counseling found through a community rehab that offered in-patient and out-patient services; flexible schedule, sliding fee scale).

Re: AA - I had to shop around for meetings until I found the ones that suited me. This section of the AA site is specifically directed at young people and might help you:
Alcoholics Anonymous : Young People and AA

I never in my wildest dreams thought that I could feel this good and didn't even know that I wanted this recovery until I really "got it." The following sums it up for me...

"Do not wait; the time will never be 'just right.' Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along." - Napoleon Hill

Is it easy? Not always. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

Best wishes ~
