Not sure how to start but its all gone

I guess I have had it with feeling like I am wasting my life. I dropped all the alcohol I had in the house off at the dumpster this morning. I am going to try not to have anything between now and Thanksgiving. Hopefully, I am nervous and a little bit scared. I don't want to feel so anxious but I was up thinking about it all night long. I know many have encouraged me to do this and I am here making public statement that today will be Day 1. Its my mom's birthday. She died in 2003 and beat an alcohol problem. I just don't have any friends to support me throught this.

Hi Jerry,

You will find lots of support here.

Good for you for getting rid of the alcohol in your house.

Welcome and congrats on your decision. Just take it a day at a time. I poured all mine down the drain last week. Later I commented to a friend that I should have given it to him, but he said maybe it was better to get rid of it, psychologically.

Just take a deep breath and focus on today.

Hey Jerry... Good to have you back... I remember when you first came on. I guess it sticks out because I am a big Dead fan.

Keep posting.

Thanks everyone. I don't want to get to a bad place and not be able to get out. Everyone I know is a drinker here in San Diego. Everyone tells me that I don't have a problem. I want to feel normal but know I am not a normal drinker.

I hear that I lot. Trust what you know about yourself and take action, which it sounds as if you have...

Congratulations Jerry. You CAN definitely do this. One day at a time or hour at a time. You might want to talk with a doctor about withdrawals. Just a suggestion.

I don't seem to be able to handle my alcohol like those around me. We have the same amount and I fall asleep and they are ready to go. I will quit for a few days then will feel good and the cycle repeats. Very frustrating. Need to honor myself more than that.

Hey, JerryBear....try the rooms. Lots of Deadheads there -- my husband is one (and I'm a convert).

Peace & Love,

“There is a road, no simple highway, between the dawn and the dark of night, and if you go, no one may follow, that path is for your steps alone”

YOU can do it. I am on Day 6. Felt exactly the same as you. It is your very own mind you will fight with. Keep posting SR has helped so much when I have trouble telling my brain to back off they are the voice of reason! For me it really is cravings. Periods of time I feel so weak. The good news is they pass and I think get easier to fight against. Love the Grateful Dead also. Had many a GOOD time in stadium parking lots

Fareyou Well!

Hey Jerry!

Welcome. With our friends we might never be that normal drinker but here I think we are all normal, in a sense. Everyone here knows what the other is going through and its nice to have that support. My friends that go and have 4 drinks at the bar and have a nice happy buzz and need no more do not know what it is like to just sit there and crave the next drink..I get itchy and antsy waiting for the waitress..i will order 2 beers if she is slow or its crowded. But everyone here understands that. Its nice to have that place to go to.

Jerry - This is what you said earlier and it stuck out to me. Give yourself the 24 hour rule. Don't drink today. If you have to get through it by white knuckling it, but do not drink today. I believe you can get through today.

Welcome back Jerry. You can do this. Just don't drink one day at a time. Don't worry about tomorrow until it gets here. Then, again, just don't drink for today. You'll make it. Be strong. Getting sober takes work but it's so worth the effort. I promise you it will get better.
