hello
Hi, this is my first time posting. I realized I had a problem with alcohol and joined AA and racked up over a year of sobriety. Then I got restless and quit AA. That was two years ago.
I am now back to my old drinking ways and it is really starting to interfere with my health& my life. I drank last night- nothing really eventful happened, but today I feel so ill and I just think I can't keep doing this to myself.
I was never a daily drinker, more of a binge drinker, and I think that is one of the reasons why I had a hard time with AA because I did not completely identify with alcoholism even though I know I have a problem. I may go weeks without drinking but when I do drink I get very drunk, very sick, and often black out.
Is there anyone out there who was more of a binge drinker who can relate to this? Even if it only happens once or twice a week I just don't think I can go on like this.
Anyways, thanks for reading and I am glad to be here.

Welcome Daisy2!
I wasn't a binge drinker, but I'm sure some will be around soon.
It's a little slow on the weekends... Stay around, though. There is lots of support for everyone here on SR.

Welcome to our recovery community....
My drinking did progress the longer I drank.
Slowly I slid downwards over decades.
The last 5 years I consider I drank alcoholically.
AA may not be for you...there is no wrong way to quit.
Some of our members are doing so without a formal structure.
Here is a list of programs for you to explore....

Hi Daisy2
I started as a binger...I ended up a daily, all day drinker - I don't see a difference myself.
It's far less to do with how much you drink, or how often - and everything to do with why, and how, you drink, IMO.
Noone here can diagnose you as alcoholic anyway - but I'm not sure it matters?
A problem is a problem and needs to be fixed. Action really was the key for me.
If AA didn't gel for you I hope you'll look at the link CarolD left
Hope you'll find some insight here, Daisy2.
Welcome!

hi folks thanks for the words of encouragement/ links to other programs. It is refreshing to see that there are other opportunities other than AA. I do belive it is a valuable program with a lot to offer, but I am not sure it is for me. Although I do want to quit drinking and it seems to be the largest, most available.

Hi Daisy.
I guess I'd consider myself a binge drinker. At least it started out that way. The only reason I want to drink is to get drunk. The faster the better. I'd usually start out with a shot or two of tequila just to speed things along. I think I'm finally realizing that there has to be a reason for this. Something going on in life that's causing me to want to disappear in drink.
Anyway, take care! Everyone seems to think AA is good, so I'd give it another chance.

Welcome daisy. I think most of us start out binging and end up completely dependent on it to live. Many years ago I would get buzzed on 2 beers. In the end I could polish off a 30 pack all by my little self in a day (starting out before noon, of course.....). I never would've imagined I could build up such a tolerance. I graduated to daily drinking somewhere along the line - probably when I first discovered the "hair of the dog" trick to help with hangovers. Hey, why not just keep a little something in my system all day -no more hangover, no withdrawal. That's not to say all binge drinkers will end up 24/7 drinkers, but it's not something to gamble with.
