Thumbs up TOPIC: Who Do You Have To Prove To That You Are Clean Or Sober To?

Hi, Im Sharon and Im an Alcoholic.

By the Grace of my HP and people
like you here in SR I havent found
it necessary to pick up a drink of
alcohol since August 11, 1990.

For that and you I am truely
grateful.

It's amazing what pops in ur head
while mowing the lawn.

I was reflecting back on my family
whom today I still dont think they
believe im actually an alcoholic.

I distant myself from all of them
yrs. ago because i couldnt make
them or change their thoughts about
me as being an alcoholic.

I tried countless times to where I
wore myself out trying to explain
who and what I really was and am.

We learn in recovery that we are
not in control, that we r powerless
over people places and things and
that we have to accept them exactly
the way they are.

Still yrs down the road at 19 yrs
sober, i cant help but wonder
why i need to defend myself to
my family. I dont see any of them
nor do i speak to them, yet those
thoughts pop up.

If my family came to me today
and said u cant be an alcoholic
after all these yrs. and uve proved
that by not picking up a drink. So
ur cured, right?

Boy, my adrinaline went sky high
as my thoughts of explaining to
them in a stern voice, "DO YOU
WANT TO SEE ME DIE?" "JUST GIVE
ME SOME ALCOHOL AND ILL SHOW
YOU."

It's like in order to prove myself
to them then they need to see
the proof. How crazy is that?

Tell them yes, you are cured.

And feel free to tell them you still choose to not drink, if you like.

But to answer your question, you've got nothing you have to prove to anyone.

I'm selfish, my sobriety is about me, myself, and I. And I really like being a sober father to my awesome kids and beautiful fiancee!

I only need to prove it to myself, and by doing that I'll prove it to my kids also.

Just to myself as well. The first year I felt I had to prove it to my daughter, she never questioned me but I had disappointed her so many times I know she didn't trust me. I still and probably always will occassionally mention it to my daughter, like tomorrow being 2 yrs since since my last drink I will likely drop that into about every conversation that I have!

Hi sharon

Me, myself and I that's all.

Some members of my family have no comprehension of what it is like to be an alcohlic and never will. They see it as a simple black and white choice of you either drink or you don't. Which on a very very basic level is true. However they cannot seem to comprehend the multitude of complexitites that come with having an addiction. So I've given up trying to explain. There's none more deaf than those who choose not to hear.

This is why I like this site, you don't have to explain yourself. We are all different but we all share a common thread that we can relate to and to me this is invaluable.

Congratulations on what you have achieved and wishing you continued success for the future.

It's such a nice day here in Baton Rouge.
There's a breeze in the air and not a cloud
in the sky. Fall is on it's way.

Thanks for sharing guys.

It's so nice to not have to run in to get
a beer to do the yard work....however
i do remember how manicured and so
perfect my yards use to look way back
when when it took me 5 to 6 hours to
do it. Then when i finished id
end up like this and fall out on
the lawn. lol

And guess what? it still takes me that
long now that im a few yrs older.

Good thing is.... Im totally sober and i
dont have to explain to anyone anything. yeeha..!

The Girl in The glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,
And the world makes you queen for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that girl has to say.

For it isn't your father or mother or friends,
Whose judgment upon you must pass,
The girl whose verdict counts most in your life,
Is the one staring back from the glass.

She's the one to please---never mind all the rest,
For she's with you clear to the end,
And you've passed your most dangerous difficult test,
If the girl in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years,
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartache and tears,
If you've cheated the girl in the glass!!!

*Saw this on SR shortly after joining and I found it incredibly moving and beautiful and so, so true. Cant remember who posted it. *

I only have to prove it to myself. I am my own worst critic.
