Mommies Who Drink: No Joking After the Schuler Tragedy
On July 26, Diane Schuler, a 36-year-old mother of two, plowed her minivan into oncoming traffic after driving the wrong way on New York's Taconic State Parkway for almost two miles, killing herself, her 2-year-old daughter, three young nieces and three men in another car. Her 5-year-old son survived. Police said last week that shortly before the crash, which occurred on a Sunday afternoon as Schuler was driving the kids back from a weekend of camping, she had smoked pot and imbibed more than 10 drinks' worth of vodka. Her blood-alcohol level was at more than twice the legal limit. A bottle of Absolut was found smashed in the wreckage.

Seems to be a theme here today.
It's clear *anyone* who drives drunk - mommies, daddies, sister, brother, son, daughter - needs to realise what a terrible and selfish risk they're taking every time they get behind the wheel.

According to the New York Post the husband claims she was not a drinker, and it was probably his bottle of vodka. I think he's just afraid of a lawsuit. I've been following this story, & I don't get how she was allowed to drive off with those kids and no one noticed how wasted she was. Supposedly, that road was very familar to her, so imagine how out of it she had to be. She did go to a rest stop & called her brother to tell him she didn't feel well & he was on his way to get her, but she didn't wait and just got back on the parkway.
It gives me chills to think of the times I drove when I shouldn't have. I always thought I was fine - but we can't judge ourselves or our reactions when we're drunk. I'm glad for the reminder. I never have to behave that way again.

Me too Hevyn...but many times, I knew I wasn't fine.
I was just in chaos. And drunk. And on pills...
Nothing mattered but me, and what was going on in my world.
Pure and utter selfishness.
Only by the grace of God ...did I not kill myself or someone else.
Grateful for Providence, and second chances.

Prayers for the survivors of all those who were lost in that tragedy....and for all those who may have their lives taken or changed forever today by a drunk driver.....and like Taz always says "A moment of silence for those of us (alcoholics) who are still out there".

Anbesol. That's what the husband & lawyer now claim it was. I think he may be trying to protect her because he was smashed himself on the day he let her drive away with the kids. Apparently he's had DUI's in the past.
