Where to Get Professional Help?

Where do all the people find those therapists and counselors? Do you have to pay for professional advice in cash, try insurance or something else? I don't believe there can be anything like this for free??? Is anything in this life for free? Accept a good andvice on SR? ;-)

Living in New York, I would think there would be many services available for little or no money. You might try using google to find them in your area. Good luck to you.

Maybe start with the City Health Dept for NYC and ask questions, lots of questions.

Yes there is some 'free' counseling and there is 'sliding scale.'

If there has been emotional, mental, or physical abuse, call the nearest Domestic Violence center as they have lots of help available also.

Just some places to start.

Love and hugs,

Hello there swert, and pleased to "meet" you

An excellent place to find a _good_ therapist is in a meeting of Al-anon. Almost everybody at a meeting has one, and the few who don't _are_ one

You mention you have kids, so you can see if the school district in your area has a counselor available. If they don't then they can refer you to one.

Another good resource is the hospitals that have an alchohol/drug rehab unit. Most of them will let you talk to a counselor once or twice at no charge.

And last but no least, you mentioned seeing a lawyer. They can usually refer you to a therapist.

While you are doing all of that, be sure to ask for a therapist that specializes in alcohol / drug addiction. There's many different specialties and it really helps to find the right one.

If you do have insurance, therapists are listed by their specialties: addiction, codependency (yes, it's actually listed there), domestic abuse.

Another great resources is the larger churches. Many of them have counselors on staff or have the ability to refer you to a therapist. I know probably 5 therapists who take patients refered from their church on a sliding scale. They view it as part of serving the congregation.
