Rain In My Heart - Alcoholic TV Series (10 parts)

Pretty scary & pretty sad but it might be good for some to see. Please share your thoughts.

We are dealing with life and death. We need to be careful what we say to sick and suffering alcoholics. I found it heartbreaking that even the doctors think we drink due to lack of willpower. Why don't they understand alcoholism? Are we getting the message out or are we back to pre AA hopelessness?

Those are some of my thoughts......

So true, thanks for sharing. At the time of posting this I thought it might be good for people to see the dark side so that they understand the possible consequences of their drinking... but my intention is not to bring people down in any way either.

SR community, please let me know if you feel that this is too strong/dark for new comers & we can move or delete as needed.

I found it helpful to see as sad as it was.

Take Care,

NB

Hi NB

I hope it won't be taken down.

We sit in sterile meetings and we are so far from the coal face now. In our early days we were in the hospitals, we had booze in the cupboard to help sick alchies detox. We smelt it and we stayed sober because we were close to the suffering.

Make no mistake, for those who have been sober a while, this is exactly what we need to see. We need to do whatever it takes to fuel our desire to help these fellow sufferers and to keep it in the front of our minds and our daily lives. Our lives depend on it.

Thanks Pilgrim

Complacency was one of my biggest hurdles to pass when I first started thinking I might have a problem. I needed some tough love & tough situations to push me over the edge. Some of our newcomers have a chance to skip some of that pain and torture & start on their path to recovery.

com⋅pla⋅cen⋅cy
 –noun, plural -cies.
1. a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc.

I watched it a few days ago, it is very insightful. There is a misunderstanding there that alcohol is all about will power or lack of will power. There is a genetic predisposition that an outsider will never understand fully.

I thought the guy who needed the liver transplant was a lovely man, the kind of guy you would like to have as a next door neighbour.

Thankyou.... I really mean that

I have just watched all of it.... You know what scares me the most? .... up until the last bit where they revisited the people (which btw has moved page)....
There was no mention of recovery.... no mention of any help/support out there.
I know the film was to focus on the NHS.... and maybe i am being nieve... but do the hospitals not inform people of the support networks out there?.... i dont just mean AA... but that would have been a good place to start....
It really shocked me and I pray i never choose to put myself back in the situation where that could be my life...

I go on another site which is for professionals working in the field and i hope you dont mind but i would like to post the links there too?

It was a heartbreaking documentry.... but i cannot say i wish i didnt watch it... i can only thankyou for passing it on...
You have helped me to reinforce why i need my recovery today... and for that i am grateful.

What is the link where they revisit the people? I have watched it all and I am not sure what to say other then there but by the grace of God . . . Can't even finish that sentence. Could identify in a way with each one of them. Its a small way, but I know if I continued to drink the way I was it would be a lot more identification issues. Its disturbing, but definitely helpful at the same time. I don't know if they should have concentrated only on the cases that were so deep into it, but I can see why he might have done that. It is a horrible, horrible addiction and such a sad coping mechanism which we repeatedly would turn to. I do believe finding new coping methods is a necessity in order to recover and be free from this thing. That's my opinion any ways.

I REALLY appreciated listening to this and it has strengthened my resolve. SR is just so amazing for lighting the fire when I need it the most. I thank you many times over for sharing it. Please do let me know where to find the revisiting link if you know.

Thanks Louis, please share away. It seems as if most of the medical community give up on alcoholics very easily because they have seen some of the same people over & over again but its the new people that are honestly looking to make a change that get that same "I have seen it before, you are not going to beat it" treatment.

I would be interested to see what kind of response they have.

Take Care,

NB

I watched this series months ago when it was first posted here on SR. I remember it was so sad because I knew just what they were going through, but thanks to recovery I don't have to go there. Some people just can't get it, I know because my mom was one of them. Great documentary for anyone suffering from this disease.

the 26 year olds story made me want to cry,
i couldnt believe what i was hearing, she almost died from vomiting blood, then said afterwards she was going out with her mates but was going to have just a small glass of wine with ice in it,
that proved to me beyond any thing the insanity of alcoholism
