Suggested Recovery Reading...
I'm sure this has been asked before, but besides traditional AA literature, what are some suggestions on books or readings on recovery?
Also, if you'd like to share what drew you to it or why it resonated with you.
Thanks!

Hi,
For my recovery, I really leaned on books:
1. 'The Seat of the Soul' by Gary Zukav
2. 'The Power of Now' by Eckhart Tolle
And, to inspire me to believe that I really could recover:
'Drinking: A Love Story' by Caroline Knapp

I was strongly impacted by excerpts of "Under the Influence" posted by Carol at

For whatever reason, the section on hangovers hit me particularly hard (in a good way).
I look forward to seeing the suggestions in this thread! Nice topic, thanks!

"Dark Night of Recovery" by Edward Bear. I've found in sharing it with others that it works best after having some kind of spiritual experience. It sort of gets to the spirit of producing that awakening. Very easy, non-technical, and quick read.

The green softcover NA Step Working Guide.
(Hazelden -- The Narcotics Anonymous Step Working Guides)
It asked questions throughout that I had to answer. It was difficult 'lying to myself' so I had to answer the questions honestly.
I buy these handbooks and give them to newcomers now (NA or AA).

Well, I may be a little biased but I read, enjoyed, and applied the following books to my recovery/spiritual practice:
The Twelve Step Buddhist
One Breath at a Time
The Zen of Recovery
Still Waters
Deep Waters
and I think one or two I don't remember . I also enjoy the writings of Kevin McCauley, a recovering addict who served time in federal pen, flight surgeon Marine Corp and addiction specialist. You can find some ofd his stuff at The Institute for Addiction Study, The Institute For Addiction Study He also has a CD out--The Disease Model of Addiction--Part One: For People in REcovery. I have met and spoken to Dr. McCauley, and he is a genuine and caring individual.

When I was very first in recovery, Prentiss' book, The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure was a fave.. non-disease model, non-12 step based.. if that's of interest. Made a hunk of sense to me.
We all have our tools, that was a great one for some insight for me. A book will never get or keep us sober.. but we can get ourselves that way with an army of resources

The Basketball Diaries - Jim Carroll
I have started reading though. Not too much about all recovery. A couple about addiciton and then the end is recovery. Like "Broken" By William Cope Moyer It was about his struggle with crack addiction so I was very interested in it. "Heroin Diaries" By Nikki Sixx was a real good one. I cant believe he is even alive.
Now I am just reading "Uncle John's Fast Acting, Long Lasting Bathroom Reader". LOL
And my Open Mind Womens Daily Inspiration For Becoming Minful. Which I am sharing with you all.
I am going to order some Buddhism books and SMART books here soon. And Iw ant to read A Million Little Pieces too.
