AA meeting called "S.O.S. Participation"?
Does anyone know what a "S.O.S. Participation" meeting is? It's listed under a directory of local AA meetings. Gosh, they have so many different kinds of meetings but half of them I can't figure out what they are. I wish they had a key!
Thanks

I Googled before I asked, and I saw "Secular Organizations for Sobriety" and "Save Our Selves". But the list (and the site) is very specifically AA. Would it be normal for Secualr meetings to be listed on an AA schedule?
Thanks!
Thanks!
It could also just be the name of the meeting.
S.O.S. as in HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Participation.
there should be code somewhere in the listing to tell you if it is

Women's
Men's Speaker

Book Study
Participation
etc
One of the Meetings here is call Keep It Simple ....... discussion 3 weeks of the month and speaker one week.
Meetings can have different names that may not have anything to do with recovery.
The name of the meetings is really not as important as the 'type' of meeting.

Really, I've never been to a meeting before. I wouldn't mind going to a secular meeting to check it out. And I wouldn't mind going to a regualr AA meeting to check it out. But the name "SOS participation" has me a bit frightened that it's going to be a lot of people in crisis. I don't think I'd want that to be my first experience. I'd like to see about the serenity of sobriety, not the pain of not drinking. I'm not saying never. Just not today. I am afraid that sounds selfish but I have to take care of myself and a whole roomful of people in crisis would not be good for my state of mind today.

I'm a little confused with the plethora of different meetings available but I can't complain. I'm lucky that I live in an area with so many options. It's just a little overwhelming!
Thank you!

I don't know where the list you are using comes from
however...
most AA meeting lists also have a phone number
to the areas Central AA Office.
They can help with local up to date info.

I think it's just the name of the home group. Most schedules will also list the type of meeting it is (speaker, 12&12, discussion etc). As Carol suggested, if there's a phone number listed, call and ask.
I'm in Pasadena and know of some meetings in So CA, specifically North Hollywood at a club called SOS. At any rate, it would in no way have anything to do with "people in crisis". It is no doubt just the name that particular group decided to call themselves.

S.O.S., the distress signal sent out when a ship has reached it's end, a disaster which makes abandoning ship the only alternative. I would like to think that is the reason behind the name, instead of another street meaning, which is "same old sh*t", which doesn't seem in keeping with an AA group at all.
