New guy here to say hello

My name is John, I'm 25 and live in Texas.

Some brief back ground, I have had a drinking/substance abuse problem since about 17. After turning 21 I kind of took off with my drinking, and for the last four years I have been drinking almost on a nightly basis, with a few dry spells here and there. I recently started going through a divorce from a short 5 year long relationship which has put me in a tough spot. I have been dealing with my emotions with alcohol and have pretty much lost control, I have been on a binge the last few months, drinking to the point of blacking out every night. I'm tired of using my divorce as an excuse, I need to have a clear mind, and I finally reached a very low point and I'm ready to toss alcohol. I need my life back. Sober as of 4/13/2009

Few... sorry that was kind of heavy for me... I mianly just wanted to say hello to everyone. You will probably be seeing me pop in the forums from time to time for help.

Welcome to SR John.
Congratulations on your decision to free yourself of alcohol.
I hope your physical isn't going too bad and if it is it is wise to see a doctor.
Good luck.
There is plenty of support and experience here for the asking.

WELCOME TO THE SR FAMILY!

I think you're going to be surprised at just how many people in Recovery are going through divorces or the end of relationships. Sometimes it's our drinking/using behaviors that lead to the divorce, with others, once in Recovery, they realize that they were holding on to a marriage/relatinship that has been overwith for a long time.

Whatever the reasons may be, you're going to find a great deal of support here with your newfound Sobriety (way to go!!) and also your divorce. But it's like with anything else in life, you get what you put in it. I hope you'll read around the forums and post as much as you feel comfortable with. This way, we get to know you and you get to know us.

God Bless,
Judy

Thanks for the welcome!

I think the phicical withdraws will be minor, I'm still kind of young and live a relatively active life sytle. I hope at least. What all would be involved with seeing a doctor? Would they want to put me on meds?

My drinking was a problem in our relationship, it certainly wasn't the cause of the breakup but it did create additional strain. It also let me move along with the problems we had without addressing them. Lesson learned the hard way you could say.

Welcome! This place is awesome for support. I just joined yesterday and I have recieved so much support and great advice. I'm new to recovery as well. And I just want to suggest some AA or NA meetings. I'm an opiate addict and the NA meetings have changed my life.

You took the first step, admitted your problem and are reaching out for help. All you have to do is put you feelings into words and your words into action and the rest will fall into place.

Recovery is great and it makes me excited to talk about it. A piece of advice I heard in one of my first meetings is that you have to focus as much on your recovery as you did on your addiction.

One day at a time, one moment at a time, you can do it. Have faith in yourself and in recovery.

Thanks for sharing,
~acehood

Welcome John,

Hey, I saw an ad last night on vacationing in Texas, some really nice, rugged places to check out. Might have to stop in for a visit, lol. Ice tea, with sugar, please, lol.
