Thumbs up TOPIC: Unwanted Pets A Bothersome To Newcomers? Old-Timers?

Hi Im Sharon and Im an alcoholic.

Do you as a newcomer or old-timer
have unwanted pets in ur yard that
is bothersome to you?

I Do

I had a dove with eggs in and nest in
a hanging basket up until this morning
when i saw the basket dumped over
with no dove or eggs. Only feathers
on the ground.

What happened to them?

There is an unwanted black cat
stalking our birds.

Do you have a remedey to get rid
of a pesky pet?

I could pump him with bb shots...

but done have a gun.....lol

How about ceyanne pepper?

Maybe borrow a friend's dog for a while? I scare off deer with a bb gun but raccoons are another matter, they are always harrassing my cats and eating their food. There arent many deterents on the market for these types of animals.

Sharon to get rid of the cat would be 'unbalancing' nature. It is all part of life. I have wildd birds I feed, I have feral cats that sometimes get the birds, I have dogs that sometimes catch a 'slow' feral cat. My neighbor has goats, sheep, and horses. He has 'guardian dogs' living with the livestock to protect from coyotes.

Bobcats have gotten some of another neighbors chickens.

Where my mom lived in Florida she loved to feed the ducks. But, periodically the flock would be greatly diminished by a gator or two.

It is part of life. Balance of Nature so to speak.

Love and hugs,

Oh well, too late for the doves and their babies.

The best control for cats, deer, opossum and coons is the common American black Labrador
I own one (well, who owns who) they are great dogs and they take care of the pests without hurting anyone. They either chase em away or failing that they will love em away. They are fairly effective on humans as well. I'm thinking about giving him away

Please don't shoot the cat. He didn't ask to be a stray. If people would spay and neuter their animals that would reduce the population greatly. Call Alley Cat Allies for tips on getting the cat to stay away. They can be found at alleycat.org

We have stray squirrels on our balcony and we live on the eighth floor. They attack our pet plants all the time but we have learned to cohabit with them. We used to get a stray raccoon but he hasn't come to visit in a while. The first time I saw a raccoon on our balcony really freaked me out. I know some people on the 30'th floor and he has visited them too. It seems strange to me that wild animals would climb that high on the outside of a building.
Someone must be feeding them.

Now now don't shoot the cat for acting on it's nature. Think of all those poor defenseless bugs and worms those birds eat! But as far as the cat you can get a dog that will chase it away. But doesn't work so well if it's a indoor dog and the cat stalks around at night. But you can set up traps and then you catch it turn it over to the humane society. Also works pretty good for coons.

And speaking of pesky vermin's I live in a trailer and have squirrels inside my ceiling and they're tearing little holes in it. I can see where they're getting in through it's like a little vent cover but I can't block it. Is there something else besides moth balls I can chuck in there and drive them out? I don't necessarily want to kill them because then I would have rotten squirrels carcass smell stinking up my home and the smell of moth balls drive me nuts also!

Yeah don't shoot the cat, there are lot's of nasty people out there to take it out on so pick on someone your own size! There are plenty of times where i have wanted to stick a blade in a person (not to kill just to hurt a little) but haven't done it for fear of being banged up for 10 years, the other day this horrible little woman opened her car door and bashed my car leaving a slight mark, i just kept thinking i know a couple of guys from old who would be litereally kicking her head in by now...can't help but feel like a wimp but know it would be an awful thing to do...

So i'm with you, it is frustrating but once we go down that path, animal or human, who knows where it will all end?!

Thanks guys...i won't shot it, just scare it
away.....what it does is sit behind a bush we have
near a fence, so when the birds r feeding it stakes
them out, then attacks....poor little birds....

I was gonna pour lots of ceyanne pepper around the
base of the bush so it would burn its nose....outch..!

I love ceyanne pepper so do i want to waste it on the
cat....lol...oh well...ill buy more....

The little birds pick out the seeds it wants and the rest
of the seed scatter to the ground for the doves to pick
up.....maybe put something under the feeders up high to
catch the extra seeds and possibly hold the doves so they
wont have to be on the ground....hmmmmm....

Do they have such a thing?

Just keep everything off the ground, birds, food....

spray water on him. they hate water. Spray now, not drown......i love cats. so independent!! They also keep mice and rats away and if you have a bird feeder you may have one or both of these.

I do love cats as i have 2 boys of my own.

they are my gifts in recovery. Never grew
up with pets, so my boys r a joy to have as
indoor pets.....

The black cat outside is just a bothersome
only because he's desturbing the birds while
feeding.....however ur right about it possibly
getting rid of unwanted varments.

Sharon, Please, please, please do not hurt the animal. Cayenne pepper will hurt the cat just as it would hurt you if someone stuffed it in your face.

Stop blaming animals because people are stupid and let them run around.

I can't even handle reading this thread.

My husband and I discussed options
on what to do and we are planning to
call spca...or the people that will come
pick it up so it wont get hurt.....i
dont want to hurt it either.....

We will let people who r familiar with
situations handle it.

That's the proper way to handle it.

In recovery i wouldnt be able to
sleep at night with my conscience
hurting me because i hurt someone
or something.

I dont think anyone here has suggested
on hurting the little one......i only
needed suggestions on the proper
way of ridding the unwanted guest
in my yard.

Here is what vets suggest as a way to run off unwanted animals. Squirt gun with ammonia, the animal hates it, but it is harmless.

I have a cure for feral cats and dogs!!!!

Doves are ground feeders by nature. If your bird feeder is close to bushes or places for the cat to hide, try moving the feeder out in the open then the cat won't have a place to hide before attacking the birds, and the birds will have time to escape when they see the cat coming.

However i may move them even closer for their
protection.

Good harmful solutions are great.

One real easy, but kinda unsightly, solution is to tie a small plastic bag (like the grocery store type) to the bush where the cat is used to hiding. The constant movement in the wind and the unpredictable rustling sounds the bag will make will keep most animals away. We live on a farm, and the plastic bag trick kept everything, including deer, out of the garden last year.

However, I think Laurie's advice is probably wiser than my "solution".
